James May turned fi fty the previou s week. A lso, t he rally tea m composed of war amput ees (previously mentioned i n seri es 17, episode 6) finally completed their challenge of fini shing th e 2013 Dakar Rally. Review: Ja mes revi ews the new Bentley Continental GT, and notes t he new engine a nd subtle rid e ch aracteristics. Believing th at the Bent ley, with four wheel drive syst em and a big, p owerful engine, can handle things w orse th an a Welsh coun tryside road, James takes the car onto a Welsh stage of the World Rally Championship, wi th Kris M eeke behind the wheel, and James being the co-driver. All of the dragons dec lare them selve s "out" and back in the studio, Richard concludes tha t for th e P45 to be put in production, Jeremy would have t o be dead. 149 Series 1 9, Episode 2 3 F ebruary 2013 Mick Fleet wood Challenge, Part 1: I n another ch allenge, the pre senters picke d three super cars to take on an ep ic race. S ince it was Hammond9;s turn to select the challenge l ocation, the team went to the Western United Stat es. Jeremy selected t he Lexus LFA, Jame s chose t he n ew Aston Martin Vanquish, and Richard to ok th e SRT Viper. After a brief driv e in the Nevada desert, the trio headed to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, specifically the d rag strip, to compete in drag races orga nized by th e Las Vega s Police De partment; whom organi zed it wit h the theory tha t allowing peop le to drag race, lega lly, at a closed circuit, would preven t street racing. Despite th e high performance of their cars, the tri o were beaten by modi fied production cars, and 4WD ca rs, in each of th eir drag races. News: Jeremy comes up with a solution on how to solve the crisis affecti ng B ritain 's town ce ntres : sacking all traffi c wardens and removing double yellow lines. The trio then revie w a Chin ese produc t designed to stop drowsiness beh ind the whee l, before they too k a first look at the 2013 Jagua r F-Type. Th ey p raised its styling, but criticized its high price t ag of £ 60,000, as well as its target audience. Jam es m entions Peugeot Citro en's car intended to run on compresse d air; Jeremy a ttem pted to use a fire extin guisher t o demonstrate, but f ailed after only ca using himsel f to turn sl owly around. Challenge, Part 2.: After l eaving Las Vegas, James and Richard make fun of Jeremy 's LFA for lacking not only B luet ooth connection and iPod connectors, but cup holder s, despite b eing the most ex pensive ca r. They a re then tasked t o head to Willow Springs Internati onal Mot orsports Park, b ut they instead stop on a grooved road, where each car driv es ove r the grooves and produce s notes. When they reach Willow Spr ings, they ar e force d to play an aerial version of Laser Quest, where they would drive 5 la ps around the track, whilst being chased by two Aer macchi SF.260 armed with laser guns. In the end, James won the challenge by b eing hi t only 17 times. Star in a Reasonabl y Pric ed Car: Fleetwood Ma c's Mick Fleetwood drove the Kia Cee& #39;d around the Test Track wi th a lap of 1:45 .4. Challenge, Part 3: Depart ing Willow Springs, the group h eaded for Los An gele s, Californ ia. In ord er to do "real world&quo t; testin g, Rich ard devised a challenge t o see who could bur n the best elevens. The thre e instead ende d up drawing a phallus and left LA. The team then s tayed for a night in Palm Springs. However, the producers gave them a final chall enge . The three would drive f rom Pa lm Springs to the Me xican border at Calexico the following morning, and the last to make it to the Mexica n border would have to t ravel into th e country itself to d rive the Mastrett a MXT, a Me xican sports car made fun of by the presente rs in an e arlie r series, f or a later segment on the sh ow. In re venge for taking the m to America, Jeremy and James sabotaged Hammond39;s Vi per, causing him to lose 10 minutes in t he race. Despite making a st op for fu el, Jeremy mad e it to the finish line first, with James in se cond . Richa rd then walk ed to the border being the last pe rson to arrive. A t the st udio, James and Jeremy end by saying that the Viper was awful and that th e Van quish and L FA were amazing. 150 Series 19, Episode 3 10 February 2013 Amy Macd onald Review: Jeremy reviews the Toyota GT86 and the Subaru B RZ. The c ars are almost ident ical, but Jerem y pre fers the Toyota GT86. The Stig then completed a lap of the Test Track in 1:31:3. News: They discu ss the new S ubaru Imprez a, which is not coming to UK, and t hey then talk about the new Maserati Quattroporte. Challenge, Part 1: The producers have re serv ed a single ticke t to a football match at the S an Siro in M ilan, Northern Italy . The trio have a race from Wembley Stad ium to the San Siro. Jeremy d rives t he Shelby Mustan g GT500 and Ri chard and James travel o n publi c transpor t. Similar to the previous rac e to Mo nte Carlo, Ri chard an d James are not allowed to use any ca rs, and Jeremy is not a llowed to us e any trains. According to Jere my, since the last e pic rac e, the trains have be come faster and boats have become slowe r. Richard and James opened up a big lead whilst travelling o n the Eurostar, and arriv e in Paris while Jeremy was still crossing the English C hannel on a fe rry. After rea ching France, Jeremy di scovers that the Mustang only holds 50 lit res in its fuel tank. After lea ving Paris, Rich ard and James discuss w hat to do upon arriving in Milan — as there are two of them but only one ticket. Hundreds of miles behind, Jeremy e nds part 1 of th e challenge stating o ut loud, "I& #39;m gonna lose !" Star in a Reasonably Pric ed Car: Am y Macdonald drove the Kia Cee 9;d around the Test Trac k in 1:44.4. D uring one of her practice runs, Amy accid entally des troyed one o f the r unway lights, which Jeremy give s to her after revealing the la p time. Challenge, Part 2: T he high s peed TGV s lowed down a s it approached the mo untains that surround No rthern Italy. Jerem y be gan to cat ch up and was nearly neck and ne ck with the train, until road works at the Mont Bla nc T unnel slow him down. The train starts to accelerate again and r eaches Nort hern Italy ah ead of Jeremy. Richard and James use a tube network to get to the street s near the finish line. James maintains hi s opposi tion to run on televi sion and Richard runs off alone to find the finish line , which is at a bar in the IM Villa Veuv e Cliequot. James then assembled a bi ke which he had hidden in o ne of his bags and rid es to the bar, only to find that Richar d is alr eady there a nd has wo n the ra ce and th e ticke t to the foo tball match. Moments la ter, Jerem y arrived and accepted defeat fo r the first tim e ever in an epic race of all the series . 151 Series 19 , Episode 4 17 Fe bruary 201 3 Lewi s Hamilton Review: Jeremy reviews the Vauxhall Astra V XR, Fo rd Focus ST and Renault Me gane R enau lt Sport Cup. The Stig di d lap s of each ca r, the Focus bei ng the sl owest at 1:29.6, the Astra VXR at 1: 28.3, and th e Megan e in 1:2 7.7. Despit e this, Jeremy chose the Astra VXR as the b est overall car of the three. News: They discuss the newest car s, such as the Alfa Ro meo 4C, the next generat ion Ford Musta ng w ould be sold in Grea t Britain, but the UK version would come with a 2.0 Eco Boost engine, and the i mportance of th e hand brake tur n in "male deve lopment ". Re view: Jeremy tests the all new Kia Cee'd, putting it through a myriad of strange road tests. Including Matt LeBlanc doing a la p with both the o ld an d new Ce e'd, Bruce Willis (in charact er as John McClane) testing t he horn of the Ce e'd, Eric Clapt on testing its aux iliary input jack, and Je remy testing the Cee';d's sel f parall el p arking feature. Star in a Re asonably Priced Car: Le wis Hamilton opens up ab out his move from McLaren to Mer cedes AM G and takes the old Su zuki Liana aroun d the Tes t Tr ack, s etting the fastest F1 time, a 1:42.9. Revi ew: As punishm ent for losing the previous race, Richard is forced to revie w the Mastret ta MXT in Me xico. Minding hi s words, he states t hat the MXT was an ambitio us undertaking for the firs t-time manufac turer, but t hat it had its share of flaws. Jeremy's team wins. 152 Seri es 19 , Episode 5 24 Februa ry 2013 J ames McAvo y Challeng e, Pa rt 1: J eremy and Richard attempt t o design a car targeted at el derly people. Je remy demonstrates the complex ity of modern ca rs 9; dshboard. Richard brings a Fiat Mu ltipla and both modify i t. Jeremy br eaks the dashboard and replaces it conside ring it to b e too c ompli cated for elders. Ric hard asks for the airb ags saying that i t is dangerou s for the elderl y who are as delicat e as chi ldren, and that he needs it for a sa fety fea ture. Jeremy makes a speed ometer which reads 20 mph at t he top sp eed, he also uses an old desi gn s witch for rear fog lig ht which does nothing. Jer emy installs a pet-cage and replaces th e back seat with high seat chairs and the Fiat badge with a Rover one. They paint it in beige after observing th e shade of a hearing aid. Richard uses wat er-resistant f abric as seat c overs, and while stitching hurts his e ye. They complete the car and end the part 1 with Ri chard wearing heavy band ages over his left eye. News: Volkswagen will launch GTI version of the new Gol f and GT version of Up will be launched. Kia will l aunch the Pro Cee 9;d GT. The Min i Paceman is launched, an d the trio mock the front end of the ca r, claiming that it look s depressing. The trio a gree tha t the British are the best drivers. Alfa-Romeo re leases phot ograp hs of the Gloria, in w hich the trio mak e fu n of it& #39; s name. Richard had arriv ed late so James and Jeremy had atte mpted to play tenn is with c ars (whic h has a lot of editi ng). Review: James reviews the new Range Rover in London. The new car is compl etely redesigned, 400 kg lighter due to A luminium bo dy, has active s uspension, new gear box, min imalist dash board and offers better co mfort. James then races it against TerraMa x at Nevada Autom otive Test Centre, Nevada. The r ace wa s to a hill 10 mile across, passing through rocky terrain, hi llock , mud , river and sand-tracks. TerraMax was sw itched to dr one mode d uring t he race to deflate th e tyres a nd take a sho rt-cut. The Range Rover' ;s automatic Terr ain Response System is demons trated. James take s a longer r oute to ascend th e hill but still wins the race. At the st udio, the trio consider the driverless cars to be not very practical. Star In A Reasonably P riced Car: Ja mes McAvoy dro ve the Kia Cee'd around t he Test Tr ack with a l ap of 1:43.6 despite having l ess experience of driving cars. He d rove over grassy p atch in the last corner but manages to keep the car u nder control. Challeng e, Part 2: Jeremy and Richard ro ad-test their ca r at Christchurch, Dorset. The car has large front bumper s made up of foam, large rear-view mirrors, squeaki ng ball under the br ake-pedal, large mag nifying-glass on the dashboar d, sat nav (voiced by Richard Briers) with only four de stinatons . The car has an artificial cat on the roof which la ter fell over on the wa y of Bingo hall. Richard later s hows his s ystem to find the loca tion of park ed car (the car activates a flare and t hen releases a b alloon). Jeremy sh ows that the radio only plays Horse of the Y ear Show theme on a loo p, which both later find to be irresistib le to clap along. Th e nam e of the car is revealed to be The James. They pick up three elderly ladies fr om a pensioners' home for road-testing and drive them t o a bowl ing club wh ere it is shown that Richar d fitted the airbag at the rear f or parking assist which infl ates the airb ag on cl ose proximity. Jeremy and Richard buy food f or picnic, choosing on ly British f oods. They atta ch the shopping tr olley t o Tow hitch and head for pic nic. The roof of the car leaks as it rain s. Jeremy and Richard end up choos ing a picnic spot on roadside where the y find the tro lley to be damaged during reversing and the food to be soaked, however they ate the food which was not ruined. The next day both leave Christchu rch and Jeremy shows his system to preven t the car from being driven on the wr ong s ide of the road, the car initially so unds alarm an d later the tyres, doors and ot her parts of the car ex plode w hich stops the ca r an d renders it immobile. At the studio, James con siders the heater to be complicated, the t rio thank R ichard B riers and announce the Africa sp ecial. 153 Series 19, Episod e 6 3 Marc h 2013 No Guest Fi rst of the two-epis ode Africa Special, taking place in Africa. The episo de was sh ot in 2012. Challenge , Part 1 : Buy u sed estat e cars for up to £1,500 in Britain an d report at a small village in r ural Uganda. Jerem y arri ves in a BMW 528i Touring, Richa rd in a Subaru Impreza WRX Estate and James in a Volvo 850R Wa gon. The challeng e is to fi nd t he true so urce of the river Nile. They set of f an discover th at explo ring isn';t as diff icult as first thought when they go on a nice easy drive and find Lake Victoria, o f whom t he Victori an Expl orers thought was the source of the Nile. However they are then told that it is not the actual source of t he Nil e and there were two other disputed loc ations fo r it, one in Rwanda an d one in Burun di. However, Jeremy Clarkson insist ed that both of these lo catio ns wer e wrong and decided to head west towards L ake Edward to see whether there was a link betwee n th at lake and Lake Ki vu in Rwanda . I n their journey west, where they visit the Entebbe Airport and from th ere see the Ford Scorpio Estate back-up car. They cont inue into Kampala , Uganda's Capi tal City where they get held up in a traffic jam over night, the most hurrendous traffic they'd ever seen. They continue on well-maintained high ways west finding their trip incredibly easy bef ore reachin g the town of Mbarara in the southwe st of t he country, via a stop in Jezza, a villa ge in Mp igi Di strict. Here they st ay in a disgusting hotel, after driving through te a plantations in an att empt to discover a lovely teahouse hotel, which in the mind of Richard, was bound to found due to tea programmes he'd seen. In Mbarara they st ayed in the Economic Lodge with Jeremy h aving a bed with faeces on it. They left the hotel disgusted before Richard h as t he idea to make the cars 'hote ls' . James modifies his Volvo by adding a library, Ric hard adds a cooker and Jere my adds a coffin. The coffin h e uses to put his clothe s in, he sle eps on Egyptian Cotton. They leave fo r Lake Edwar d, camping overnight there b ecause of its beauty before head ing in search of the ri ver heading for Lake K ivu. None of the rivers connect the lake as they all head east rather than south. The y give up, l eaving them disappointed. Then Jeremy looks at a map a nd discovers the source of t he N ile must be on the othe r side of Lake Victoria. His re asoning is that the Mediterranean Sea is effective ly an inland sea an d so Gibraltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rather than Alexandria in Egypt. Afte r discovering this they decide t hat th ey must drive straight to the other s ide of L ake V ictoria to get to the so utheast coast i n Tanzania near t he Serengeti.
