Since it was Hammond's turn to s elect the challenge l ocation, the team wen t to the Western United St ates. J eremy selected the Lexus LFA, James chose the new Aston Martin Vanq uish, and Richard took the SRT Viper. After a brief drive in the Nevada desert, th e trio hea ded t o La s Vega s Motor Speedway, speci fically th e drag strip , to compete in drag races organized by the Las Vegas Pol ice Departmen t; whom or gani zed it with the theory that allowin g people to dr ag race, leg ally, at a close d circuit, woul d prevent stree t racing. Despi te the high performance o f their cars, the trio were beaten by modif ied production cars , and 4WD cars, in eac h of their drag ra ces. News: J eremy comes up with a soluti on on how to solve the crisis affecting Britain's town centres: s acking all traf fic wardens and re moving d ouble yellow lines. The trio then revi ew a Chinese product d esigned to stop drowsiness behind t he wheel, b efore they took a first loo k at the 2 013 Jaguar F-Ty pe. They praised its styling, but criticized its high price t ag of £60,000, as well as i ts target audience. James me ntions Peugeot Citroen's car inten ded to run on compressed air; Jere my attempted to use a fire e xtinguisher to demonstra te, but f ailed after only causi ng himself to turn slo wly a round. When they re ach Wi llow Spri ngs, they ar e forced to play an aer ial v ersi on of Laser Quest, where they would drive 5 lap s around the track, w hilst being chased by two Aermacchi SF. 260 armed wi th las er guns. I n the end, James won the cha llenge by being hit o nly 17 times. Star in a Reasonably Priced C ar: Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleetwood drove the Kia Cee';d around the Test Track with a lap o f 1:4 5.4. Ch allenge, Part 3: Departing Wi llow Springs, the group heade d for Los Angeles, California. In order t o do &qu ot;real world" testing, Richard devised a ch allenge to see who could burn the best eleven s. The three instead ended up d rawing a phallus and left LA. The team then stayed for a night in Pa lm Spr ings. However, the producers gave them a fi nal chall enge. The t hree would drive fr om P alm Springs to the Mexican b order a t Calexico the following morning, and the last to mak e it to the M exican border would have to travel into the cou ntry it self to drive the Mastretta MXT, a M exican sports ca r made fun of by the presenters in an earlier series, for a later segment on the show. In revenge for taking them to America, Jeremy an d Ja mes sabotage d Hammond's Vipe r, ca using him to lose 1 0 mi nutes in the race. Despite m aking a stop for fuel, Jerem y made it to the fi nish line first, wit h James in s econd. Rich ard then wal ked to the bo rder being the last perso n to arrive . At the studio, Jame s and Jeremy end by saying that the Viper was a wful a nd that t he Vanquish and LF A were amazing. 1 50 Ser ies 19, E pisode 3 10 Februa ry 2013 Amy Macd onald< br/> Review : Jeremy reviews the Toyot a GT86 and the Subaru BRZ. The cars are alm ost identical, but Je remy p refe rs the Toyota GT86. The Stig then completed a lap of the T est Track in 1:31: 3. C hallenge, Part 1 : The pro ducers have reserved a single ticket to a football match at the San Siro in Mil an, Northern I taly. The trio have a race fr om Wembley Stadium t o the San Siro. Jeremy drives th e Shelby Mustang GT 500 and Richard and James travel on public tra nsport. Similar to the previous race to Monte Carl o, Richard and James are not allowe d to use any cars, and Jeremy is not allowed to use any trai ns. According to Je remy, s ince the last epic race, the tr ains have become faste r and boats have become slower. Richard and James opened up a big lead whilst travelling on the Eurosta r, and arrive in Paris while Jeremy was still crossing the E nglish Cha nnel on a fer ry. After rea ching France, Jeremy dis covers that the Mustang only holds 50 litres in its fuel tank. Aft er leaving Pa ris, Richard and Jame s discuss what to do upon arri ving in Mi lan — as there are two of th em but only one ticket. Hundreds of miles behind, Jeremy ends part 1 of th e cha llenge stating ou t loud, "I' ;m gonna lose!&q uot; Sta r in a Reasonably Priced Car: Amy Macdonald drov e the Kia Cee' ;d around the Tes t Tra ck in 1:44.4 . Du ring one of her practice runs, Amy a ccidentally destroyed one of the r unway ligh ts, w hich Jeremy gives to her after re vealing the lap time. Ch alle nge, Part 2: The high speed TGV slowed do wn as it ap proached the mountai ns that surround Nort hern It aly. Jere my began to catch up and was nearly n eck and nec k with the train, until road wor ks at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slo w him do wn. The train starts to accelerate again and reaches Northe rn Italy ah ead of Jeremy. Richard and James u se a tu be networ k to get to the st reets near the finish line . James maintains his oppos ition to ru n on televisio n and Ric hard runs of f alone to find the finish line, which is at a bar in the IM Villa Veuve Cliequot . James then assembl ed a bike which he had hidden in one of his bags and rides to the bar, onl y to find that Ri chard is already there and has won the race and the ticket to the f ootball match. Moments later, Jer emy arri ved and accepted defea t for the first time ever in an ep ic race of all the seri es. 151 Series 19, Episode 4 17 February 2013 Lewis Ha milton Review: Je remy reviews the Va uxhall Astra VXR, Ford Focu s ST and Renault M egane Renault Sport Cup. The S tig did laps of eac h car, the Fo cus be ing the slowes t at 1:29.6 , the Astra VXR at 1:28.3, and the Megane in 1:27.7 . Despite this, J eremy cho se the Astra VXR as the best overall car of the three. News: They dis cuss the newest ca rs, such as the Alfa Romeo 4C, the next generat ion Ford Mustang would be sold in Gre at Britain , but t he UK vers ion wo uld come wit h a 2. 0 EcoBoost engine, and the importance of the h andbrak e turn in &q uot;male development". Rev iew: Jeremy tests the all new Ki a Cee'd, putt ing it through a myri ad of strange road tests. Including Matt LeBlan c doing a la p with b oth t he old a nd new C ee'd , Bruce Will is (in char acter as John McClan e) testing the horn of the Cee' d, Eric Clapton testing its auxiliary input jack, and Jeremy testing the Cee' d' ;s self parallel park ing feature. Review : As punishmen t for losing the previous race, Ri chard i s forced to review the Mastretta MXT i n Mexico. Minding his words, he states that the MXT was an ambitious underta king for t he fir st-time manufac turer, bu t that it had its shar e of flaws. Challenge: Jeremy and James pla y car r ugby using Kia Ce e'ds an d Kia Sportag es at Twickenh am Stadium and Stig in Vauxhall Astra P olice car as the referee. Jeremy's team wins. 152 Series 19, E pisode 5 24 Feb ruary 2013 James McAvoy Chal lenge, Part 1: Jere my and Ric hard attempt to d esig n a car targeted at eld erly people . Jeremy demonstrates the complexity of modern cars' dshboard. Richard bring s a Fiat M ultipla and both modify it. Jeremy breaks the dashboard and r eplaces it considering it to be too complicated for el ders. Ric hard ask s for the airbags saying that it i s dangero us for the elderly who are as delicat e as children, and that he ne eds it for a safety feature. J eremy makes a speedometer which rea ds 20 mph at the top spee d, he also uses an old des ign switch for rear fog light whi ch does nothing . Jeremy installs a pet -cage and re places the back seat with high seat chairs and the Fia t bad ge wi th a Rover one. They pa int it in beige after observing the shade of a heari ng aid. Rich ard uses water-resis tant fa bric as s eat covers, and while stitching hurts his e ye. Th ey complete the car and end the part 1 with Richard wearing heavy band ages over h is left eye. N ews: Volkswa gen will la unch G TI versi on of th e new Golf and GT ver sion of Up will be launche d. Kia will launch the Pro C ee'd GT. The Mi ni Paceman is launched, and the t rio mock the fro nt end of the car, claiming that it looks depressing. The tr io agree tha t the British are the best drivers. Alfa-Romeo rel eases phot ographs of the Glori a, in which th e tri o make fun o f it's name. Richard had arrived l ate so James and Jerem y had attempted t o play te nnis with cars ( which has a lot of editing). Review: James reviews the new Range Rover in London. The new car is comple tely redesigned, 400 kg lighter due t o Aluminium body, has active sus pension, new gearbox , minimalist dashboard and offers better com fort. James then ra ces it against T erraM ax at Nevada Auto motive Test Centre, Nevada . The race was to a hill 10 mile acro ss, passing through rocky terrain, hillock, mud, river a nd sand-tr acks. Terr aMax was switched t o dro ne m ode during the race to deflate the t yres and take a short-cut . The Range Rover 's automatic Terrain R esponse System is demonstrated. James takes a longer route to ascend th e hill but still win s the race . At the studi o, the trio cons ider the driverless c ars to be not ve ry pr actical. Star In A Reasonably Priced Car: James McA voy drove t he Kia Cee'd around t he Test Track with a l ap of 1:43 .6 despite having less experience of driving cars. He drove over grassy patch in the last corner but manages to keep the c ar und er control. Challenge, Part 2: Jeremy and Richard road-test their car at Christchur ch, Dorset. The car has large front bum pers ma de up of foam, large re ar-view mirrors , squeaking ball under t he brake -pedal, large magnifying- glass on the dashboard, s at nav (voiced by Richard Brier s) with onl y fo ur destinat ons. T he car has an ar tificial cat on the roof which later fell over on the way of B ingo hall. Richard later shows his sys tem to find the location of parked car (the car activates a fl are and then releases a balloon). Jeremy shows t hat the radio only plays Hors e of the Year Sho w them e on a loop, which both later find to be i rresistible to clap a long. The nam e of th e car is revealed to be The James . They pick up three elderly ladies from a pensioners' hom e for road-t esting and d rive th em to a bowling club where it is shown that Richard fitted the airbag at the re ar fo r parking assist whic h inflates the airbag on close pr oximity. Jeremy and Richard bu y food for picnic, choosing only British foods. They attach the sh opping trolley to To w hitch and head fo r picnic . The roof of the car le aks as it rai ns. Jeremy and Richard end up cho osing a picnic spot on roads ide where they find the trolle y to be damaged during reve rsing and the fo od to be soaked , however t hey ate the food which was not ruined. T he next day both leave Christchurch and Jeremy sh ows his system to prevent the car from being driven on the wrong s ide of the road, the c ar ini tially sounds alarm a nd la ter the tyres, doors a nd other parts of the car explode which stops the c ar and renders it immob ile. At the studio, James considers the heater to be co mplicated, the t rio thank Ri chard Briers and a nnounce the Afric a special. 153 Series 19, Ep isode 6 3 M arch 2013 No Guest First of the two-episode Africa Spec ial, taking place in Af rica. The e pisode wa s shot in 2012. Challenge, Part 1: Buy us ed estate cars for up to £1,500 in B ritain an d report at a small village in rur al Uganda. Jeremy arrives in a BMW 528i Touring, R ichard in a Subaru Impreza WRX Esta te and James in a Vol vo 850R W agon. The challenge is to find the true source of the river Nil e. Th ey set off an discover th at e xplor ing isn't as difficult as first thought when they go on a nic e easy drive and find Lake Victoria, of w hom the V ictorian Expl orers thoug ht was the source of the Nile. Ho wever they are then to ld that it i s not the actual source of the Nile and there were two other disputed location s for it, on e in Rwanda and one in Burundi. Howeve r, Jeremy Clar kson insisted that bot h of these locations were wr ong a nd decided to head west towar ds La ke Edward to see whet her there was a link between that lak e and Lake Kivu in Rwanda. In their journey west, where they visit the Entebbe Airport and from there see t he Ford Scorpio Es tate back-up car. They continue into K ampala, Ug anda 's Capital City where they get held up in a traffi c jam overni ght, the mos t hurrendous traffic the y' ;d ever seen. They continue on well-maintained highways west find ing their tr ip incr edibly easy befor e reaching t he town of Mbarara in the southwest of the country, via a stop in Je zza, a village in Mpigi Dist rict . Here the y stay in a disgustin g hotel, after driving through tea pla ntations in an attempt to d iscover a l ovely te ahouse hotel, which in the mi nd of Richard, was b ound to fou nd due to tea prog rammes he'd seen. In Mbar ara th ey stayed in the Ec onomic Lodge with Jeremy having a bed with fae ces o n it. They left th e ho tel disgusted befo re Richar d has the i dea t o ma ke the car s 'hotels&# 39;. James modifies his Volvo by adding a library, Richa rd a dds a cooker and Jeremy adds a coff in. The coffin he use s to put his clo thes in, he sleep s on Egy ptian Cot ton. They leave for Lake Edward, cam ping ove rnight th ere because of its beauty before heading in search of t he river hea ding for La ke Kivu. Non e of the rivers conn ect t he lake as they all h ead east rather th an s outh. They give up, leavin g them disappointed. Then Jere my loo ks at a map and dis covers the source o f the Nile must be on the other side of Lake Victoria. His r easonin g is that the Mediterran ean Sea is effec tively an i nland sea a nd so Gibr altar is the true mout h of t he Nile, rather than Alexandr ia in Egypt. After disc overing th is they decide t hat t hey must d rive straight t o the other side of Lake Victori a to get t o the south east coast in T anzani a near the Se rengeti.
