Jeremy claims th at he has f ound a male equiva lent version of Fifty Shad es of Gre y, presenting a kid's book about t ractors. The new Chev rolet Sti ngray is announc ed. James May turne d fifty the previous week. Al so, the ral ly team composed of war amp utees (previous ly mentioned in ser ies 17, e pisode 6) finally completed their challenge of finishin g the 2013 Dakar Rally. R eview: Ja mes reviews the new Bentley Con tinental GT, and notes the new engine and subtle ride cha racteristics. Bel ieving that the Bentley, w ith four wheel drive system and a big, powerful engine, can han dle things worse than a Wels h co untryside r oad, James takes the c ar onto a Welsh st age of the World Rally Champ ionship, with Kris Meeke behind the wheel, and James b eing the co-driver. Desp ite the car h aving less grip, more weight, an electronic handbr ake (unsuitable for usage on a r ally stage) and Jame s not bein g proficient at giving pace n otes, the Bentle y was actually fa ster than o ne of the full WRC cars. Challenge : Jeremy a ttempts to build a car smal ler than the Peel P5 0, naming his creation th e P45. It was based on a quad bike, with b odywork f itted, designed to wrap around the d river. All of the dragons decl are themse lves "o ut" ; and back in the stud io, Richar d concl udes that fo r the P45 to be put i n pro duction, Jeremy would have to be de ad. 149 Series 19 , Episode 2 3 February 2013 Mi ck Fle etwoo d Cha llenge, Pa rt 1: In another challenge, the pre senters pick ed three s uper cars to take on an epic race. Since it was Hamm ond's tu rn to selec t the challenge lo cation, the team wen t to the We stern United S tates. Jeremy selected t he Lexus LF A, James chose the new Ast on Ma rtin Vanqu ish, and Richard took the SRT V iper. After a brie f drive in the Nevada desert, the t rio head ed to La s Vegas Motor Speedway, specifically th e drag stri p, to co mpete in drag races organized by the Las Vegas Police Departme nt; whom organized it with the theory tha t all owing people to drag race, leg ally, a t a closed circuit, wo uld prevent street racing. Despit e the h igh perfor mance of t heir cars, the trio wer e beat en by modifi ed production ca rs, and 4W D cars, in each of their dr ag races. New s: Jeremy comes up with a solution on how to solve the crisis affecting Britain's town centre s: s acking all traffic wardens and remov ing double yello w lines. The trio then revi ew a Chinese product design ed to stop d rows iness beh ind the wheel, bef ore they t ook a first look at the 2013 Jaguar F-T ype. Th ey prais ed its styling, but criticized its high price t ag of £60,000, a s well as its target aud ienc e. James me ntions Peugeot C itroen& #39;s car int ended to run on compressed air; Jeremy attempted to use a fire extinguisher to demonstr ate, but failed after only c ausing himself to turn slowly ar ound. Challenge, P art 2.: After leaving Las Vegas, James and Richa rd make f un of J eremy';s LFA for lacking not onl y Bluetoo th con nection and iPod c onnectors, but cup holders, despite being the most expensive car. Th ey ar e th en tasked to head to Willow Springs I nternation al Motorsports Park, but they inste ad stop on a grooved road, whe re each car drives over the grooves and p roduces not es. When they reach Will ow Springs, they a re forced t o play an aerial versio n of Laser Quest, where they would drive 5 laps around the t rack, whi lst being ch ased by two Aermacch i SF.260 armed with laser guns. In the end, Ja mes won the challenge by being hit only 17 times. Star in a Reas onably Pri ced Car : Flee twood Mac 9;s Mick Fleetwood drove the Kia Cee'd a round the Test Track with a lap of 1:45.4. Challenge, Part 3: Depart ing Wi llow Springs, the grou p headed for Los Angeles, Califo rnia. I n order to do & quot ;real world& quot; test ing, Richard dev ised a challenge to see who co uld burn the best elevens. The three instead ended up dr awin g a ph allus and left LA. Th e team then stayed for a night in Palm Springs. However, th e producers gave them a final challenge. The three would drive from P alm Springs to the M exican border at Calexico the following morning, and the las t to make i t to the Mexican border would h ave to travel into the country itself to drive the Mastret ta MXT, a Mexican sports car m ade fun of by the presenters in an earlie r series, for a later s egment o n the show. In revenge for taking them to Am erica, Jeremy and James sabotaged Hamm ond's Vi per, cau sing him t o lose 10 m inutes in the race. Despite making a stop for fuel, Jeremy made it to the finish lin e first, w ith James in second. Richard then walke d to the b order b eing the la st person to arrive. At t he stu dio, James and Jeremy end by saying that the Viper w as awful and th at the Vanquish and LFA were amazi ng. 150 Se ries 19, Episode 3 10 February 2013 Amy Macdona ld Review: Jeremy revie ws th e To yota GT8 6 and the Subaru BR Z. The cars are almost identical , but Jer emy pre fers th e Toyot a GT86. The Stig then completed a lap of the Test T rack in 1:31:3. Ne ws: They discuss the new Subaru Impreza, which is not coming to U K, and they the n talk about the new Maser ati Quattroporte.< br/> Challenge, Part 1: The pr oduc ers have reserved a si ngle tic ket to a football match at the San Siro i n Milan , Nor thern Italy . The trio have a race f rom Wembley Sta dium to the San Siro . Jeremy drives the Shelby Mustang GT500 and Richard and James travel on public transport. Similar to the previous race to Monte Carlo, Richar d and Jam es are not allow ed to use any cars, and Jeremy is not allowe d to use any trains. According to Jeremy, since th e last epic race, th e trains have become fas ter and boats h ave becom e slower. Ric hard and James opened up a big lead whilst travelling on the Eurostar, and arrive in Pari s wh ile Jeremy was still crossin g the Engl ish Chan nel on a ferry. After reaching Fr ance, Jeremy discov ers that th e Mustan g on ly holds 50 litres in its fuel t ank. After leaving Pa ris, Richa rd and James discu ss what to d o upon arriving in Milan — as there are t wo of the m but only one ticket. H undreds of miles behind, Jeremy ends part 1 of the challenge s tatin g out loud, "I'm gonna lose !" St ar in a Reaso nably Priced C ar: Amy Macdonald d rove the Kia Cee' d around the Test Track in 1:44.4. During one of her practice runs, Amy acci dent ally destroyed o ne o f the runway lights, which Jeremy give s to her after r evealing the lap time. Ch allenge, P art 2: The high speed TGV slow ed down as it approached the mountains tha t surround N orthern I taly. Je remy began to catch up and was nearly neck and neck wit h the train, un til road works at t he Mont Blanc Tu nnel slow him down. The train starts to accelerate again and reaches Nort hern Italy ahead of Jeremy. Ric hard and James use a tube network to get to t he streets near the finish line. James m aint ains his o pposition to run on television and Richa rd runs of f alone t o find the finish line, which is at a b ar in the IM Vi lla Veuve Cliequot. Jame s then a ssembled a bike whic h he had hidden in one of hi s ba gs and rides to the bar , only to fi nd that Rich ard is alre ady there a nd has w on the race and the ticket to the f ootb all m atch. Review: As punishment for losi ng the previous race, Richard is forc ed to review the Mastre tta MXT in Mexico. M inding his word s, he states that the MXT was an ambitious undertaking for the fir st-time manufacturer, but that i t had i ts share of flaws. Jeremy's team wins. 152 Series 19, Episode 5 24 February 2013 James McAvo y Challenge, Part 1: Jeremy and Richard attempt to design a car targeted at e lderly people. Jeremy demonstra tes the complexity of modern ca rs' d shboard. Richard brings a Fiat Multipla and both modify it. Jeremy break s the dashboa rd a nd replaces it con sidering it to be too compli cated for el ders. Rich ard asks for the airbags saying t hat it is da ngerous f or the elde rly who are as delicate as chi ldren, and that he needs it for a safety fe ature. Jerem y makes a sp eedometer which r eads 20 m ph at the top speed, he als o uses an old design switch for rear fog light wh ich d oes nothing. Jer emy installs a pet-cage and repl aces the ba ck s eat wit h high s eat chairs and the Fiat badge with a Rover one. They paint it in beige after observing the s hade of a hearing aid. R ichard uses water-resis tant f abric as s eat covers, and wh ile stitching hurts his eye. T hey complete the car and end the part 1 wit h Richard we aring heavy bandag es over his left eye. News: Volkswagen will launch GTI version of th e new Golf and GT version of Up will be launche d. K ia will la unch the Pro Cee 'd GT. The Mini Paceman is launched, and t he trio mock th e front end of the car, claiming th at it lo oks depres sing. The t rio agree that the Briti sh are the best drivers. Alfa-Romeo releas es photographs of the Gloria , in which the trio make fun of it 's n ame. Richard had arrived late so James and Jeremy had attempted to play tennis wit h ca rs (which has a lot of editi ng). Review: James reviews the new Range Rover in London. The new ca r is comp letely redesigned, 400 kg ligh ter due to Aluminium body , has a ctive suspension, new gearbox, minimalist dashboard and of fers better comfor t. Jam es th en races it again st TerraM ax at Nevada A utomotive Test Centre, Nevada. The race wa s to a hi ll 10 mile acr oss, pass ing through rocky terr ain, hillock , mud, river and sand -tracks. Terr aMax wa s switched to d rone mode during the race to defla te the tyres and take a short- cut. The R ange R over&# 39;s a utomatic Terrain Response S ystem is d emonst rated. James takes a longer route to ascen d the hi ll but still wins the ra ce. At the studio, the trio consider th e driv erless cars to be not very practical. He drove over grassy patch in the last corner but manag es to keep t he car under control. C hallenge, P art 2: Jeremy and Richard roa d-test their car at Christch urch, Dor set. The car has large front bumpers made up of foam, lar ge rear-view mirrors, s queaking ball under the brake-pedal, large magnifying-glass on the das hboard, sat nav ( voic ed b y Richard Briers) with onl y four destinatons. T he car has an a rtificial ca t on the r oof which later fell over on the wa y of Bingo hal l. R ichard later shows his system to find the location of parked car (the car activates a flare and then releases a balloon). Jeremy show s that the radi o only plays Horse of the Year Show theme on a loo p, which both later find to be i rresistible to clap along. The nam e of the car is revealed t o be The James. They pick up three e lderly la dies fr om a pensioners9; home for road-testing and drive them to a bowling c lub where it is sh own that Richar d fitted the airbag a t the rear for park ing assist which inf lates the airbag on close pr oximity. Jerem y and Richard buy fo od for picnic, choosin g only Br itish foods. The y attach the shopping trolley to Tow hitch and head f or picn ic. The roof of t he car lea ks as it r ains. Je remy an d Richar d end up choo sing a picnic spot on roads ide where they find th e trolley to be damaged during reversing and the food to be soaked, however t hey ate the food which was not ruined. The next day both leave Chri stchurch and Jeremy s hows his system to p reven t the car f rom being driven on t he wrong side of the r oad, the c ar initia lly sounds alarm a nd later the tyres, doors and other pa rts of the car explode which sto ps the car and renders it immo bile. At t he stud io, James considers the he ater to be complicated, the trio thank Richard Brier s an d ann ounce the Africa special. 153 Serie s 19, Episode 6 3 Ma rch 2013 No Guest First o f the two-episode Africa Special, tak ing place in Africa. The episode was shot i n 2012. Chall enge, Part 1: Bu y use d estate cars fo r up to £1,500 in Britain and repor t at a small vil lage i n rural Uganda. Jere my arrives in a B MW 528i Tour ing, Ric hard in a Subaru Imp reza WRX Estate and J ames in a Volvo 850R Wagon. The challenge is to find the true source of the river Nile. The y set off an discover that explo ring isn';t as difficult as first though t when they go on a nice ea sy drive and find La ke Victoria , of whom th e Victorian Explo rers thought was the so urce of t he Nile . However they are then told that it is not the actual source of th e Ni le and the re were two other disputed locat ions fo r it, one in Rwanda and one in Burundi. However, Jere my Clarks on insisted that both of the se location s were wrong and decided to h ead west towards Lake E dward t o see whether there was a link between that lake an d Lake K ivu i n Rwa nda. In thei r journey west, where they visit the Ent ebbe Airp ort and from there see the For d Scorpi o Estate back-u p car. They continue into Ka mpala, Ug anda&# 39;s Capital City where they get held up in a traffic jam overnig ht, the most hurrendous tra ffic they 'd ever seen. They continue on well-m aintaine d highways west finding t heir trip incredibly easy before rea ching the town of Mbarara in t he southwes t of the country, via a st op in Jezza, a vill age in M pigi Distric t. H ere they stay in a disgusting hotel, after driving thr ough tea plantations in an a ttempt t o disc over a lovely teahouse hotel, wh ich in the mind of Ri chard, was bound to fo und due to te a programmes he'd se en. In Mbara ra they sta yed in the Econo mic Lodge with Jeremy havi ng a bed with faeces on i t. They left the hotel disguste d before Ric hard has the idea to make the car s 9;hotels'. J ames mod ifie s his Volvo by adding a library, Ric hard adds a cooker and J eremy adds a coffin . The coff in he uses to put his clot hes in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cotton. Th ey lea ve for La ke Edwar d, campi ng overnight there be cause of its beauty before heading in search o f the river heading for Lake Kivu. Non e of the rivers con nect the lake as they all head east rather than south. They give up, leaving them disappointed. Then Jere my look s at a map and discovers the source of th e Nile must be on th e other side o f Lake Victoria. His r easo ning is that the Mediterranea n Sea is effectiv ely an inland sea and so Gibraltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rather t han Alex andria in E gypt. After d iscover ing t his they decide that they m ust drive str aight to the other s ide of Lake Victor ia t o get to th e so utheast coast in Tanzania near the Serengeti.
