Despite the m assive t win-turbo en gine and horsepower, thanks to i ts sop histic ated aerodyn amic package, th e car can easily be drive n hard with out the r isk of spi nning. The Huayra also set the fastest t ime on the To p Gear Test Track in the hands of The Stig, 1:13.8, beating the previo us record, set by the Ariel Atom V8. Ne ws: The Dac ia Sandero is n ow on s ale in the UK. T he Mercedes-Benz SLS AM G Black has bee n up dated to pr oduce extra horsep ower, but th e handling i s still challenging. Jeremy claim s that he has fo und a male equivalent version of Fif ty Shades of Grey, pres enting a kid 39;s book about tracto rs. The new Chev rolet Stin gray is announced. James May turned fifty the previous w eek. Also, the rally team comp osed of w ar amputee s (previousl y mentioned in seri es 17, episo de 6) fi nally compl eted their challe nge of fini shing the 2 013 Dakar Rally. Review: Jam es r eviews the ne w Bentley Continenta l GT , and n otes the new engine an d subtle ride characteri stics. Belie ving that the Bentl ey, with f our wheel drive system and a big, powerful engine, can handle things worse than a Wels h countryside road, Jame s takes th e car o nto a We lsh stage of the World Rally Cha mpionship, w ith Kris Meeke be hind the wheel, and James bei ng the co-driver. Despite the car having less grip, more weight, an electron ic handb rake (unsuitable for usa ge on a rally stage) and James not bei ng proficie nt at givi ng pace not es, th e Bentley wa s actually faster than one of the full WRC cars. Star In A Reasonably Priced Car: Damian L ewis takes his tur n in the car, and drifts the Ki a Cee& #39;d around the snow -coa ted test tra ck and crosses th e finish line sidewa ys, setting t he slowe st e ver time of 2:09.1. Jeremy cheer s Da mian up b y mak ing a se parate boa rd for snow (he justs put the time underneath and to the side of the fa stest lap ti me on that board) and says that he is th e fastest dr iver ever on their "snow board" . Challenge: Jerem y attempts to build a car smaller than the Peel P50, naming his creation the P45. It w as based on a quad bike, with bod ywork fitted, designed to wrap around the driv er. He t hen presen ted his idea to the 39;Dragons 9; in a D ragons' De n style format. Al l of the dragons dec lare thems elves "out " and back in the studio, Ri chard con cludes that for the P45 to be put in production, Jeremy woul d have to be dead. 149 Series 19, Epi sode 2 3 Feb ruary 2013 Mick Fleetwood Challenge, Pa rt 1: In an other c hallenge, the pr esenters pi cked three super cars to take o n an epic race. Since it was Hammond's turn to select the chal lenge location, the team went to the Western United States. Jeremy selected the Lexus LFA , James chose the new Aston M artin Vanquish, and Richard took th e SRT V iper. After a brief driv e in the Nevad a de sert, the trio headed to Las Vegas Motor Speed way, specifically th e drag strip, to co mpete in dra g races organized by the Las V egas Police De partment; whom organized it wi th the the ory tha t allowing people to drag ra ce, legally, at a closed circu it, would preven t street ra cing. Despite th e hi gh performan ce of their cars, the trio were beaten by modified pr oduct ion cars, and 4WD cars, in each of their drag races . News: Jeremy comes up wi th a solution on how to sol ve the crisis affec ting Britain's t own centres: sacking all t raffic war dens and remov ing double yellow lines. The trio then revie w a Chines e product designed to stop d rowsiness behind the wheel, before the y took a firs t look at the 201 3 Jaguar F- Type. They praised it s styling, but criticiz ed its high price tag of £60,00 0, as wel l as its ta rget aud ience. James me ntions Peugeot Citroen& #39;s car inten ded to run on compressed air; J eremy attempted to use a fire e xtinguisher t o demonstrate, but fa iled a fter only causing him self to turn slow ly around. Challenge, Part 2.: After leaving Las Vegas, James and Richard mak e fun of Jeremy9;s LFA for lacking not o nly Bluetooth connection and iPod connectors, but cu p holders, de spite being the most exp ensive car. They are then taske d to h ead to Willow Springs Internati onal Motorsports Park, b ut they instead stop on a grooved r oad, where eac h car dri ves ove r the grooves and prod uces notes . When they reach Willow Spri ngs, they are forced to pl ay an aerial vers ion o f Laser Que st, where t hey w ould drive 5 l aps around the track, whilst being chased by two Aermacchi SF.2 60 armed with la ser guns. In the end, Ja mes won the chall enge by being hit only 17 times. Star in a Reaso nably Priced Car: Fle etwood Mac' s Mick Fleet wood drove the Kia Cee 39;d ar ound the Test Track with a lap o f 1: 45.4. Challenge, Part 3: Departing Willo w Sprin gs, the group headed for Los Angeles, California . In order to do "real world" testi ng, Richard devised a challenge to see who could burn the best elevens. The three instea d ended up drawing a phallu s and left LA. The team then stay ed for a ni ght in Palm Springs. However, the producers gave the m a final challen ge. The three would drive fr om Palm Springs to the Mexican border at Calexico the fol lowi ng morning , and the last to make it to the Mexican border wo uld have to travel into the c ountry it self to drive th e Mastretta MXT, a Mexican spor ts car made fun of by the p resenters in an earlier series, for a later se gment on t he show. In revenge f or tak ing th em to America, Jere my and Jame s sabotaged Hammond 9;s Viper, c ausi ng him to lose 10 minu tes in the race. Despite making a stop fo r fuel, Jeremy made it to the fini sh line first, with James in s econd. R ichard then walk ed to the border being the last perso n to arrive. At the studio, James and Je remy end by saying that the Viper was awful and that the Vanquis h and LFA w ere amazi ng. 15 0 Series 19, Episode 3 10 Febru ary 2013 Amy Macdonald Revie w: Jeremy re views the Toyota GT86 an d the Su baru BRZ. The c ars are almost identi cal, but Jeremy prefers the Toyota GT86. The Stig the n comp lete d a lap of t he Test Track in 1:31 :3. News: T hey discuss the new Sub aru Impreza, which is not comi ng to U K, and t hey then talk about the new Maserati Quattro porte. C hallenge, Part 1 : The pr oducers have reserved a single ticke t to a footbal l mat ch at the San Siro i n Milan, North ern It aly. The tri o have a race from Wemble y Stadium to t he San Siro. Jeremy d rives the Shelby Must ang GT500 and Richard and James travel o n public transport. Similar to the previous rac e to Monte Carlo, Richard and James are not al lowed to use a ny cars, and Jeremy is not allowed t o use any trains. Ac cording to Jeremy, si nce t he last epic race, the trains have becom e faster and boats have become slower. Rich ard a nd James ope ned up a big lead whilst tr avelling on the Eurostar, and arrive in Paris while J eremy was still crossing t he Engl ish Channel on a ferry. Aft er re aching France, Jeremy di scovers that the Mustang only h olds 50 litres in its fuel tank. After leaving Par is, Richard and Ja mes dis cuss what to do upon arriving in Milan — as there are two of them but only o ne ticket. Hundreds of miles behind, Jeremy ends part 1 of th e challenge statin g out loud, "I9;m gonna lo se!" Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Amy Macdonald drove t he Kia Cee';d around the Test Track in 1: 44.4. During one of her practice runs, Amy accidentall y destroyed one of the runway li ghts, which Jeremy gives to her after revealing the lap time. Challenge , Part 2 : The high speed TGV slowed down as it approached the mountai ns that surround Northern Italy. Je remy began to catch up and was nearl y nec k an d neck with the train , until roa d works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him down. The train start s to acce lerate again and reaches Northern Italy ahead of Jeremy. Richard and Jame s use a tube ne twork to get to the s treets near the finish line. James main tains his oppos ition to ru n on televis ion and R ichard runs off alone to find the finish line, which is at a bar in the IM Villa V euve Cliequo t. James then assembled a bi ke which he had hidden in one of his bags and ri des to the bar, on ly to find that Richard is a lready the re and has w on the race and the ticket to the footba ll match . Moments later , Jeremy arrived a nd a ccepted de feat for the first time ever in an epi c race of all the series. 151 Series 19, Episode 4 17 February 2013 Lewis Hamilton Review: Jeremy reviews the Vauxhall Ast ra VXR, Ford Foc us ST and Re nault Me gane Renault Sport Cup. The Stig did laps of each car, the F ocus being the slow est at 1 :29.6, the Astra VXR at 1:2 8.3, an d the Meg ane in 1:27.7. Despite th is, Je remy chose the Astra VXR as the best overal l car of t he three. News: The y discuss the newest cars, suc h as th e Alfa Romeo 4C, the next generation Fo rd Mustang would be sold i n Great Britain, but the UK version would come with a 2.0 EcoB oost engine, and t he importan ce of the handbrake t urn in "male development& quot;. Review: Jer emy tests the all new Kia Cee 39;d, pu tting it through a myriad of stra nge road tests. Inclu ding Matt Le Blanc doing a lap with both the old and n ew Cee'd , Bruce Wi llis (in charac ter as John McClane ) test ing the horn of the Cee'd, Eric Clapto n testing its auxiliary in put jack, and Jeremy testing the Ce e'd' ;s self parallel parki ng f eatur e. Star in a Reasonab ly P riced Car: Lewis H amilton opens up about h is move from McLaren to Mercedes AMG and take s the old Suzuki Liana around the T est Track, setti ng the fastest F1 time, a 1:42.9. Review: As punish ment for los ing the previous race, Richard is forced to review t he Mastretta MXT in Mexico. Minding his words, h e states th at the MXT was an ambitiou s un dertaking for the first-ti me manufacturer, but tha t it had its share of flaws. Ch allenge: Jeremy and James play car rugby using Kia Cee 9;ds and Kia Sporta ges at Twickenham Stadium and Stig in Vauxhall Astra Police car as the referee. Jere my's tea m wins. 152 Series 19, Episode 5 24 February 2013 Jam es McAvoy Chall enge , Part 1: Jeremy and Richard a ttempt to design a car targe ted at elderly people. Jere my demonstrates the complexity of modern cars' d shboard. Richard brings a Fiat Multipla and both modify it. Jeremy breaks the dashboard and replaces it considering it to be too c omplicated for elder s. Richar d asks for the airba gs saying that i t is dangero us for the elderly w ho a re as delicate as children, a nd t hat he needs i t for a safety fea ture. Jeremy makes a speedo meter whi ch reads 20 mph at the top speed, he also uses a n old design switch for rear fog light which does nothing. Jere my installs a pet-cag e an d repl aces the back se at with high sea t chairs and the Fiat badge with a Rover one. They paint it in beige after observi ng the shade of a hearing aid. Richard us es water-resistan t fabric as seat covers, and while stitching hurts his eye. They complete the car and end the par t 1 with Richard wearing heavy bandages over his l eft eye . News: Volksw agen will launch GTI version of the new Golf and GT version of Up will be laun ched. Kia will laun ch the P ro Cee' d GT. The M ini Paceman is laun ched, and the trio moc k the fr ont end of th e car, claiming t hat it looks depress ing. The tri o agree that the British are the best driver s. Alfa-Ro meo relea ses ph otographs of the Gloria, in which the trio make f un o f it';s name . Richar d had arri ved l ate so James and Jeremy h ad attempted to play tennis wi th cars (wh ich has a lot of edit ing). Review: James reviews the new Range Rover in London. The new car is completely redesigned, 400 kg lighter due to Alumini um body, has active suspension, new gear box, minimalist dashboa rd and offers bett er comfort. James then races it against TerraM ax at Nevada Automotive Test Centre, Nevada . Th e race was to a hill 10 mi le across, passi ng through r ocky t errai n, hillock, mud, river and sand-tracks. TerraMax was swit ched to drone mode during the race to deflate the tyres and take a short-cut. The R ange Rover& #39;s automa tic Terrain Response System is demonstrated . James takes a lo nger route to ascend the hill but still wins the race. At the stu dio, the trio consider the driv erless c ars to be not very practical. Star In A Reasonably Priced Car: James McAvo y drove th e Kia Cee';d around the Te st Tra ck with a lap of 1:43.6 despite havi ng le ss experience of driving cars. He dro ve o ver grassy patc h in the last corner but manage s to keep th e car under contro l. Cha llenge, Part 2: Jeremy and Richard road -test th eir c ar at Chris tchur ch, Dorset . The car has l arge front bumpers made up o f foam, large rear-view mirrors , squeak ing ball under the bra ke-pedal, la rge magni fying-glass on the dashb oard, s at nav (v oiced by Richard Briers) with only four desti natons. The car has an artif icial cat on the roof w hich later fell over on t he way of Bi ngo hall. Rich ard later sh ows his system to find the locat ion of parked ca r (the car activa tes a flare and then rel eases a balloon). Jer emy sho ws th at the radio only plays Horse of the Year Show t heme on a loop, which both later find to be i rresistible t o clap along. T he name of the car is revealed to be The James. Th ey pick up three eld erly ladi es from a p ension ers' home for road-testing and drive them to a bow ling club where it is shown that Richard fitted the airbag at the rear for p arking ass ist whi ch inf lates the airbag on close proximity. Jeremy and Richard buy food f or picnic, ch oosin g only Brit ish foods. They a ttach the shopping trolley to To w hitch and head for picnic. The roof of the car leaks as it rains. Jeremy and Richard end up choosing a p icnic spot on ro adside where they fin d the trol ley to be damaged during reversing and the fo od to b e soake d, however they ate the foo d which was not ruined. The next d ay both leave Ch ristchurch and Jeremy shows his system to prevent the car f rom being dr iven on the wrong side of the road , th e car initially sounds alarm and l ater the tyres, doors and o ther par ts of t he car explode which stops th e ca r and renders it immobil e. At the studi o, James c onsi ders the hea ter to be c omplicated, the trio thank Richard Briers and anno unce th e Afr ica special. 153 Series 19, Epis ode 6 3 March 2013 No Guest First of the two -episode Afri ca S pecial, taking place in Africa. The episode was shot in 2012. Challeng e, Part 1: Buy used estat e cars f or up to £1,500 i n Britain and report at a small village in rural Ugan da. Jeremy arrive s in a B MW 528i Touring, Richard in a Subaru Impreza WRX Estate a nd Jam es in a Volvo 850R Wagon. The challenge is to find the tru e source o f the rive r Nile. They set off an discover that exploring isn& #39; t as difficu lt as firs t thought when they go o n a n ice easy drive and f ind Lake Victoria, of who m the Victorian Explorers thought was the source of the Ni le. Howe ver they are then told that it is not the actual source of the Nile and there were two oth er dispute d locations for it, one in Rwan da and one in Burundi. Ho wever, Jere my Clark son insisted that both of these locations were w rong and decided to head west to ward s Lake Edwar d to see whether there was a link between that lak e and Lake Kivu in Rwanda. In their journey west, where they visit the En tebb e Airport and fr om there see the Ford Scor pio Estate b ack-up car. They c ontinue into Kampala, Uganda' ;s Capital City wh ere the y ge t held up in a tra ffic jam overnight, the most hurr endous traffic they39;d ever seen. They continue on we ll-maintaine d highways west finding their trip incredibly easy b efore reaching the town of Mba rara in the sou thwest of th e country, via a stop in Jezza, a village in Mpigi District. Here they s tay in a di sgusting ho tel, af ter driving through tea planta tions in an attempt to discov er a lov ely teahous e hotel, which in the mind of Richa rd, w as bound to found due to tea prog rammes he'd seen. In Mbarara they staye d in the E conomic Lodge with Jeremy having a bed with faec es on it. Th ey left the hotel d isgu sted befo re Richard has the idea to make the cars & #39;h otels9;. James modifies his Volvo by adding a librar y, Richard adds a cooke r and Jere my a dds a coff in. The coffin he use s to put his clothes in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cot ton. They leave f or Lake Edward, camping overnight there becaus e of its bea uty before heading in search o f the river he ading for La ke Kiv u. N one of the rivers connect the lake as th ey all head east rather than south. They give up, leaving them disappointed. Then J eremy looks at a map an d discovers the source of the Nile must be on the othe r side of Lake Victoria. His reasoning is tha t th e Mediterra nean Sea is effectively an inla nd se a and so Gi bralta r is the true mouth of the Nile, rather than Ale xandria in Egypt. Aft er discovering this they deci de that they must drive s traight to the other side of Lake Vi ctoria to get to the south east coast in Tanzania near the Serengeti.
