Despite the massive twin-tur bo engine and hor sepower, thanks to its sophisticated aerodynamic package, the car can eas ily be dr iven hard without the risk of spinning. The Huayr a also set the faste st time on the To p Gear Tes t Track in the hands of The Stig, 1:13.8, beati ng th e previous r ecord, set by th e Ariel Atom V8. N ews: The Dacia Sand ero is now on sale in t he UK. The Mercedes-Be nz SLS AMG Black has been upda ted to p roduce extra horsepower, b ut the handl ing i s still challenging. Jeremy claims th at he ha s found a male equivalent ver sion of Fifty Shades of Grey, presenting a kid 9;s book about tractors . The new Che vrolet Stingray is announced. James May turne d fifty the previous week. Also, the rally team comp osed of war amputees (previously mention ed in series 1 7, episode 6) fi nally compl eted th eir cha llenge of finishing the 2013 Dakar Rally. Review: James rev iews the new Bentley Continental GT, and no tes the new eng ine and subtle ride c haracteris tics. Believing that the Bentley, with fou r wheel dr ive system and a big, po werful engine, c an handl e things worse than a We lsh cou ntryside road, J ames takes the car onto a Welsh stage of the World R ally Championshi p, with Kris Meeke behind the whe el, and James being the co-drive r. Challenge: Jeremy atte mpts to build a car smaller tha n the Peel P 50, namin g his cre ation the P45. It was based on a quad bike, with bodywork fitted, desig ned to wra p around the driver. He then presented his id ea to the ';Dra gons 9; in a Dr agons' ; Den style format. Since it was Hammon d' s turn to select th e challen ge location, the tea m went to the Wester n United States. Jer emy se lected the Le xus LFA, Ja mes cho se the new Aston Martin Vanqu ish, and Ri chard took the SR T Viper. After a brief drive in the Nevada desert, th e trio headed to L as Vegas Motor Speedway , specifica lly the drag strip, to comp ete in drag races organ ized by the L as Vegas Police Department; wh om organi zed it with the theory that al lowing people to drag race, le gally, at a c losed circuit, wo uld pr event street racing. Despite th e high performance of their cars, the t rio were beaten by modified production cars, and 4 WD ca rs, in each of thei r drag races . News: Jeremy c omes up with a solution on how to s olve the crisis affectin g Britain 39;s town centre s: sacking all traffic wa rdens and removing double yellow l ines. The trio th en review a Chines e product designed to stop drowsiness behind the wheel, before they took a first look at the 2013 Jaguar F-Type. They praised its styling, but criticized its high price tag of £60,000, as wel l as its ta rget audienc e. James mentions Peugeot Citroen's car inte nded to run on com pressed air; Jeremy attempte d to use a fire extinguis her to demons trate, but failed after only causi ng hi mself to turn slowly around. Challenge, Part 2.: After leav ing Las Vegas, James and Richard make fun of Jeremy9;s LFA for lackin g not onl y Bluetooth c onnection and iPod con nectors, but cup holders, despite being the m ost expens ive car. The y are then tasked to head to Willo w Spring s Internat ional Motorsports Park, but they instead stop o n a grooved road, where each car drives over th e grooves and prod uces notes. Whe n they reach Wi llow Spr ings, they are for ced to play an a erial version of Laser Ques t, where th ey would drive 5 laps aro und the tr ack, whilst being chased by two Aerm acchi SF.260 armed wi th lase r guns. In the end, James won th e ch allenge by being hit only 17 times. Star in a Reasonabl y Priced Car: Fleet wood Ma c's Mick Fleetwood drove the Kia Cee'd around the Test Track with a lap of 1:45.4. Challenge, Part 3: Depar ting Willow Spri ngs, the group h eaded f or Los Angeles, California. In order to do "re al world" t esti ng, Richard devised a ch allenge to see who cou ld burn the best elevens . The three instead ended up drawing a ph allus and left LA. The team then stayed for a night in Palm Sprin gs. However, the producers gave them a final challenge. The three would drive from Palm S prings to the M exican border at Calexic o the following morning, an d the las t to ma ke it to the Mexican borde r would have to travel into the country itself to drive the Mastrett a MXT, a M exican s ports car mad e fun of by the prese nters in an earlier se ries, for a later segment on the show . In revenge for taking the m to America, Jeremy a nd J ames sabo taged Hamm ond's Viper, causing him to lose 10 minutes in the race. Despite making a stop fo r fuel, Jere my made it t o the finish line first, with James in secon d. R ichard then walked to the border being the last person to arri ve. At the studio , James and Jeremy en d by saying that the Viper was awful and that th e Vanqui sh and LFA wer e amaz ing. 15 0 Series 19, Episode 3 1 0 February 2 013 Amy Macdonald Review: Jeremy r eviews the To yota GT86 and the Subaru BRZ. The cars a re almost identica l, but Jeremy prefers the T oyota G T86. The Stig then c omplet ed a lap of the Test Tra ck in 1: 31:3. News: They discuss the new Subaru Im preza , which is not coming to UK, and they then talk about the ne w Maserati Quattroporte. Cha llenge, Part 1 : The producers have reserved a si ngle ticket to a foot ball match at t he San Si ro in Milan, No rthern Italy. The trio have a race from Wembley S tadium to the San Siro. Jeremy dr ives the She lby Mustang GT500 and Ri chard and Ja mes travel o n public transport. Sim ilar to the p revious race to Monte Carlo, R ichard and James are not al lowed to use a ny cars, and Jeremy is n ot allo wed to use any tr ains. According to Jeremy, since the last epic ra ce, the trains have become fas ter and boats have become slower. Richard and Jam es op ened up a big lead whilst travelling on the Eurostar, and arrive in P aris while Jeremy wa s still crossing the En glish Chan nel on a ferry. After reaching F rance, Jeremy discovers that the Mustang only hol ds 50 litres in its fuel tank. After leavin g Paris, R ichard and James d iscuss what to do upon arrivi ng in Milan — as there are t wo of them but only one tic ket. Hundr eds of mile s behind, Jeremy ends p art 1 of the challenge stating out loud, "I 9;m go nna lose !" Star in a Rea sonably Priced Car: Amy Macdonald drove th e Kia Cee& #39;d around the Test Track in 1:44.4. During one o f her practice r uns, Amy accident ally dest royed one of the runway ligh ts, which J eremy giv es to her after reve aling the lap time. Challen ge, Part 2: The high speed TGV slowed down as it appr oached the mo untains that surround Northern Italy. Jeremy began to catch up and was nearly n eck an d neck w ith the train, until road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him do wn. The t rain star ts to accelera te again and reaches Northern Ital y ahead of Jeremy. Richard and Jam es use a tube net work to g et to the streets near the finish line. James mai ntains his opposition to run on television and Richard runs of f alone to find the finish line, whic h is at a bar in t he IM Villa Veuve Cl iequot. James then a ssemble d a bike whic h he had hidden in one of hi s bags and rides to the bar, only to fi nd that Richard is already there and has won th e race and the ticket to the foo tball match. Momen ts later , Jeremy ar rived and accepted defeat for the fir st time ever in an epic race of all the series. 1 51 Series 19, Ep isode 4 17 Febr uary 2013 Lewis Hamilton Re view: Jeremy reviews the Vauxha ll A stra VXR, Ford Focus ST and Rena ult Megane Renault Sp ort Cup. Jeremy's team wins. 152 S eries 19, Episode 5 24 Februar y 2013 James McAvoy Challenge, Part 1: Jeremy and Richard attempt to design a car targeted at elderl y people . Jeremy demonstrat es the complexity of modern ca rs' ds hboard. R ichard brings a Fiat Multip la a nd both modify it. Jeremy breaks the dashb oard and rep laces it consider ing it to be too complic ated for elde rs. Richard asks fo r the ai rbags sa ying that it is dan gerous for the elderly who are a s delicate as children, and that he needs it f or a safety feature. Jeremy ma kes a speedo meter which reads 20 mph at the top spe ed, he also u ses an old des ign switch for rear fog light which does noth ing. Jeremy installs a pet-cage and replaces the back seat with high seat chairs and the Fiat badge with a R over one. Th ey paint it in b eige after ob serving t he shade of a heari ng aid. Richard uses wa ter-resistant fabric as seat covers, and while stitchi ng hurts his eye . They complete the car and end the part 1 with Richard w earing heavy banda ges over his left eye. News: Volkswagen will l aunch GTI versio n of the new Golf and GT ver sion of Up will be launched. Kia will la unch the Pro Cee'd GT. The Mini Paceman is launched, and the t rio mock the front end of the car, claiming that it loo ks depressin g. The trio agree that the Br itish are the best driver s. Alfa-Romeo releas es photo graphs of the Glor ia, in which the trio ma ke fun of it's name. Richard had arriv ed late so James and Jerem y had attempted to pl ay tennis with cars (which has a lot of editing ). Review: James revi ews the new Range Rove r in Lo ndon . The new c ar is compl etely r edesigned, 4 00 kg lighter due to A lumi nium body, has active suspension, new ge arbox, m inimalist dashboard and offers better comfor t. Jam es then races it agains t Te rraMax at Ne vada Automotive Tes t Centre, Nev ada. Th e race was t o a h ill 10 mile across, passin g through rocky terrain, hillock, m ud, river and sand-tracks. Te rraMax was switched to drone mode during the race to deflate the ty res and take a short-cut. The Ra nge Rover& #39;s automa tic Terrain Re spon se Syste m is demons trated. J ames takes a longer rou te to ascend the hill b ut still wins the race. At t he studio, the trio consider the driv erless cars to be not very practical . Star In A Reasonably Priced Car: James McAvoy drove the Kia Cee';d around the Test Track with a lap of 1 :43.6 despite having less e xperience of driving cars. He drove over grassy patch in the last corner but manage s to keep the car under co ntro l. Challenge, Part 2: J erem y and Richard r oad-test their car at Ch ristc hurch, Do rset. The car has lar ge front bum pers m ade up of foam, large rear-view mirrors, squeaking b all u nder the brak e-pedal, lar ge magnifying-glass on the dashboard, s at nav (voiced by Richard Briers) with only four des tinatons. The car has an artificial cat on the roof wh ich l ater fell over on the way of Bingo hall. Richard later sh ows his system to find the location of p arked car (t he ca r activates a flare and then releases a ball oon). Jeremy shows that the rad io only plays Horse of the Year Show theme on a loop, which both l ater find to be irr esistible to clap alon g. The na me of t he c ar is revealed t o be The James. The y pick up thre e elderly ladies from a pensione rs' home f or road-testing an d driv e the m to a bowling club where it is shown that Rich ard fitted the airbag at the rear f or parki ng assist which inflates t he ai rbag on close proxi mity. Jer emy and Rich ard buy food for picnic, choo sing only Br itish f oods. They at tach the shopping tro lley t o Tow hitc h and h ead for picnic. The roo f of th e car lea ks as it r ains. Jeremy and Richard end up choosing a pic nic spot on road side where they find the trolley to be damag ed during re versing and the fo od to be soaked, however the y ate the food which was not ruined. The next day both leave Ch ristchurch and Jeremy shows his system t o prevent the car from be ing driv en on the wr ong sid e of the road, the car initiall y sounds ala rm and later the tyres, doors and other parts of the car explode which stops th e car and renders i t immobile. At the studio, James consider s the heate r to b e complicated, the trio thank Richard Briers and anno unce the A frica special. 153 Series 19, Ep isod e 6 3 March 2013 No Gues t Firs t of the two-ep isode Africa Special, taking place in Afric a. The episode wa s shot in 2012. Challenge, Part 1: Buy used estate cars fo r up to £1,50 0 in Britain and report at a s mall village in rura l Uganda. Jeremy arr ives in a BMW 528i Tou ring, Richard i n a Subaru I mpreza W RX Estat e and James in a Volv o 850R Wagon. The c hallenge is to find the true source of the river Nile. They se t off an discove r that exp loring isn't as difficult as first thought when they go on a nice eas y drive and find Lake Victoria, of whom the Vict orian Explorers thoug ht was the source of the Nile. H owever they are then told that it is not the actual sou rce of the Nile and there w ere two other di sput ed loca tions for it, one in Rwanda an d one in Burundi. However, Jeremy Clarkson in sisted that both of these locations were wron g and decided to head west toward s Lake Edward to see whether there was a link between that lake and Lake Kivu in R wanda . In their journey west, where they visit the Entebbe Air port and from the re see the Ford Scorpi o Estate back-up car. They c onti nue into Kampala, Ugan da's Capital City where they get held u p in a traffic jam overnight, the most hurrendous traffic they ' d ever seen. They c ontinue on well-maintained highways west finding their trip incredibly easy before reaching the town of Mbarara i n the southwest of the country, via a stop in Jezza, a v illage in Mpigi District. He re they stay in a disgusting ho tel, after driving through tea p lantations in an a ttempt to disc over a lovely teahouse hotel, which in the mind of Richard , was bo und to found du e to tea p rogrammes he' d seen. In Mbarara they staye d in the Econom ic Lodge with Jere my having a bed with faeces on i t. The y le ft the hotel disgusted bef ore R ichar d has the idea to mak e the cars 'hotels'. Jame s modif ies his Volvo by adding a li brary, Richard adds a cooker and Jeremy adds a coffin. The coffin he uses t o put his cl othes in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cotton. They leave for Lake Edward, ca mping overn ight there because of its beauty bef ore heading in search of the river headin g for Lake Kivu. None of the rivers connect the lake as they all head east rather than south. T hey give up, leaving t hem disappointed. Th en Jeremy looks at a map a nd discovers the s ource of the Nile mus t be on the other side of Lake Vict oria . His reas oning is that the M editerranean Sea is e ffectively a n inland sea an d so Gibraltar is the true mo uth of the Nile, rat her than Alexandria in Egypt. Af ter dis covering t his they dec ide th at they must drive straight to the oth er side of L ake Victoria t o get to the southeast coast in Tanzania near the Serengeti.
