News: The Dacia Sandero is now on sale in the UK . The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG B lack ha s been update d to produce extra horsepo wer, but the handling is still challenging. Jeremy claims that he has fo und a m ale equivalent version of Fifty Shade s of Grey, presenting a kid's book about tractors. The new Chevrolet Sting ray is announced. J ames Ma y turned fifty the previous week. Also, the rally team composed of war amputees (previously menti oned in s eries 17, episode 6 ) fi nally completed their challenge of fi nishing the 2013 Dak ar Rally.< br/> Review: James re views the new Bentley Continenta l GT, an d notes the new engi ne and subtle ride char acteristics. Believing that the Bent ley, with four wheel drive syst em and a big, powerful engine , can handle thi ngs worse t han a Welsh countryside road, James takes the car onto a Welsh sta ge of the World Rally Championship, with Kri s Meeke beh ind the whe el, and James being the co-driver. Despite the car having les s grip, more wei ght, an e lectronic handbrake (unsuitable for usage on a rally stage) and James not being proficient at giv ing pace no tes, the Bentley was a ctuall y faster tha n one of th e full WRC cars. S tar In A Re asonabl y Priced Car: Damian Le wis takes hi s tur n in the car, and dr ifts the Kia Cee39;d a round the snow-coated test trac k and crosses the fin ish line si deways, setting the slowest ev er time of 2:09.1. Jeremy cheers Damian up by making a separate board for snow (he ju sts put the time underneath and to the side of the fas test lap time on that board) and says t hat he is the fast est drive r ever on their &quo t;snow board ". C hallenge: Jeremy attempts to build a car sm aller than t he Peel P50 , naming his crea tion the P45. It was based on a qua d bike, with bodywork fit ted, designe d to wrap around the driver. He then presented his idea to the ' ;Drago ns' in a Dragons' Den style format. All of the dr agons decla re themselv es "o ut" a nd back in the stu dio, Richard co ncludes that for t he P45 t o be p ut i n production, Jeremy would have to be dead. 149 Se ries 19, Episode 2 3 February 2013 Mick Fle etwood Challenge, P art 1: In a nothe r challenge, the p resenters picked three super cars to take on an epic race. Since it was Hammond& #39;s turn to select the challenge location, the team went to the Western Un ited States . Jeremy selected th e Lexus LFA, Ja mes chose the new Aston Martin Vanquis h, and Ri chard took the S RT Viper. After a brief drive in the N evada desert, the trio headed to Las Vega s Motor Speedway, specifically the drag strip , to compete in d rag races org anized by the Las Vegas Police Depar tment; whom organized it with the theor y that a llowi ng people to drag race, legally, at a clos ed circu it, would prevent street r acing. Despite the hig h perf ormance of their cars, the trio w ere beaten by modified prod uction cars, and 4WD car s, in each of their drag races. News : Jer emy comes up wi th a solution on how to solve the crisis a ffecting Bri tain's t own centres: sacking all traffic warden s and removing do uble yello w lines. The trio t hen review a Chinese produ ct designed to stop dro wsiness b ehind the wheel, before they took a first look at the 2013 J aguar F-Typ e. They praised its styling, but criticized its h igh price tag of £60,000, as well as its targ et audience. Ja mes me ntions Peugeo t Citroen's car intende d to r un on compressed ai r; Jerem y at tempted to use a f ire extinguisher to de monstrate, but failed after only causing hims elf to turn slowly around.< br/> Cha llenge, Part 2.: After leaving Las Vegas, James and R icha rd make fun of Jeremy';s LFA for lacking not only Bluetooth connect ion and iPod connectors, but cup ho lders, des pite being the m ost ex pensi ve car. They are then task ed t o he ad to Willow Springs Inte rnational Mo torsports Park, but they i nstead stop on a grooved road, where each c ar driv es over t he groo ves and prod uces notes. When they re ach Wi llow Springs, they are forced to pla y an aerial versi on of Laser Quest, where they would drive 5 laps around th e trac k, wh ilst be ing chased by two Aermacc hi SF.260 armed wit h lase r gun s. In the end, Ja mes won the challenge by being hit only 17 times. Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Flee twood Mac';s Mick Fleetwood drove the Kia Cee'd ar ound the Test Track with a lap of 1:45.4 . Ch allenge, Part 3: De parting Willow Springs, t he gro up headed for Los Angeles , California. In order to do & quot;real world" te sting, Ri chard devised a challenge to see who could bur n the best elevens. The three instead ended up drawing a pha llus and left LA. The te am then stayed for a night in Palm Springs. Howe ver, the producers g ave them a final challenge. The th ree wo uld drive f rom Pa lm Springs t o the Mexican border a t Cale xico the fol lowing morning, and th e last to ma ke it to the Me xican bor der would ha ve to travel into the country itself to drive the Mastretta MXT, a Mex ican sp orts ca r made fun of b y the presenters in an earlie r seri es, for a la ter segment on the show. In reveng e for taking them to America , Jeremy and James sabotaged Hammo nd's Viper, c ausing him to lose 10 mi nutes in the race. D espit e making a stop for fuel, Jeremy made it to the fin ish line first, with James in second. Richard then walked to the border being th e last person t o arrive. At the stud io, Ja mes and Jeremy end by s aying that the Viper was awful and that t he Vanq uish and LFA were amazing. 150 Series 19, Episode 3 10 Feb ruar y 2013 Amy Macdonald Review: Jeremy reviews the Toyota GT86 and the Subar u BRZ. The cars are almost identical, but Jeremy pre fers the Toyota GT86. The Stig then completed a lap of the Test Track in 1:31:3 . News : They d iscuss the new Subaru Imp reza, which is not coming to UK, and they then talk about the new M asera ti Qua ttroporte. Challenge, Part 1: The producers have res erved a sin gle ticket to a football ma tch at the San Siro in Milan, Northern Italy. The trio have a race from Wem bley Stadium to the San Siro. Jeremy drives the Shelby Mustang G T500 and Ric hard and James travel on pu blic transport. Similar to the pre vious race to M onte Carlo, Ri char d and Jam es are not al lowed to use any cars, and Jeremy is not allowed to use any trains. According to Jer emy, s ince t he last epic race, the trains have bec ome fas ter an d boats have bec ome slowe r. R ichard and James opened up a big lead whilst travelling on the Euro star, and arrive in Paris while Jeremy wa s st ill cro ssing the Englis h Channel o n a ferry. Aft er reachi ng France, Jeremy d iscovers that the Mustang only holds 50 litres in its fuel tank. After leaving Paris, R ichard a nd James discuss what to do upon arriving in Milan — as there are t wo of them b ut only one ticke t. Hundreds of miles be hind, Jere my ends part 1 of the challenge stating out loud, "I'm gonna lose!" Sta r in a Rea sonably Priced Car: Amy M acdonald drov e the Kia Cee'd aroun d the Test T rack in 1:44.4. During one of her practice runs, Amy accidentally destroyed one of the r unway lights, whic h Jeremy gives to her after re vealing the lap t ime. Challenge, Part 2: The high speed T GV slowed down as it approached the mountain s that surrou nd Northern Italy. Jeremy b egan to cat ch u p and was nearly neck and n eck with the train, until road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slo w him down. The train st arts to accele rate again and reaches Northern Italy ahead of Jeremy. Ri chard and James use a tube networ k to get to the stre ets near the finish line. James maintains his oppo sition to run on tele visi on and Richard runs off alone to find the finish line, which is at a bar in the IM Vil la Veuve Cliequo t. James then assemb led a bi ke which he had hidden in one of hi s bags and rides to t he bar, onl y to find that Ric hard is alr eady there and has won the r ace and the ticket to the foo tball match. Mome nts later, J erem y arrived and accep ted defeat for the first time ever in an epic race of all the series. 151 Ser ies 19, Episode 4 17 February 2013 Lewis Hamilton R eview: Jerem y reviews the Va uxhall Astra VXR, Ford Foc us ST and Renault Megan e Renault S port Cup. The Stig did laps of e ach car, th e Fo cus being the slowest at 1:29.6, the As tra VXR at 1:28.3, and the Megane in 1 :27.7. Despite th is, Jeremy chose the Astra VXR as the bes t overall car of the three. News: They discuss the newest cars, such as the Alfa Rom eo 4 C, the next genera tion Ford Mus tang wou ld be sold i n Great Britain, but the UK vers ion woul d com e with a 2.0 EcoBoos t engine , and the importance of the ha ndbra ke turn i n "male development". Review: Jeremy tests th e all new Kia Cee'd, put ting it through a myria d of strange road tes ts. Including Matt LeBlanc d oing a la p with both the old and new Cee39;d, Bruce Willis (in character a s Jo hn McClane) testing the horn of the Cee' d, Eric Clap ton testing its au xiliary input jack, and J eremy testing the C ee'd& #39; s self pa rallel pa rking feature. Revie w: As punish ment for los ing the previous ra ce, Richard is forced to review the Mastretta MXT in Mexico. Mindin g his wor ds, he st ates that the MXT was an ambitious undertaking for the first-t ime manufacturer, but that it had its sha re of flaws. Challenge: Jeremy and James play car rugby using Kia Cee'ds and Kia Sportages at Twicken ham Stadium and Stig in Va uxhall Astra Police car as the referee. Jeremy's team wins. 15 2 Ser ies 19, Episode 5 24 February 2013 James McA voy Challenge, Part 1: Jeremy a nd Richard attempt t o design a car targe ted at elderly people. Jeremy demonst rates the c omplexi ty o f modern cars' dshbo ard. Richard brings a F iat Multipla and both modify it. Jeremy breaks t he das hboar d and replaces it c onside ring it to be to o complicated for elders. Richard asks for th e airbags s aying th at it is dangerous for the elderly who are as delicate a s children , and that he needs it for a saf ety feature. Jeremy makes a speedometer which reads 20 mph at th e top speed, he a lso uses an old des ign switch for rear fog light which does nothing. Jeremy installs a pet-cage and re places the b ack seat wit h high seat chairs an d the Fiat badge with a Rove r one. They paint it i n be ige after obs erving the shade of a hearing aid. Richard use s water-re sistant fa bric as s eat covers, and while stitching hu rts his eye. T hey co mplete the car an d end the part 1 with Ric hard weari ng heavy bandag es ov er his left eye. News: Volkswagen will launch GT I version of the new Golf and GT ve rsion of Up will be launched. Kia will launch the Pro Cee 'd GT. The Mi ni Paceman is launch ed, and the trio mock the fron t end of t he car, claiming that it looks depressing. The trio agree th at the Bri tish are th e best drivers. Alfa-Romeo releases pho tographs o f the Gloria, in which the trio make fun of it's name. Ric hard had ar rived la te so James and Jere my h ad attem pted to play tenni s with cars (which has a lot of editing). Review: James reviews the new Range Rover in London. The new car is com plet ely redesigned, 400 kg lighte r due to Aluminiu m body, has active su spension, new gearbox, minimalist dashb oard and of fers better co mfort. James then races it aga inst Terra Max at Nev ada Automoti ve Test Centre, Nevad a. The race was to a hi ll 10 mile across, passi ng through rocky t errain, hillock, mud, river and sand-t racks. Ter raMax was sw itched to drone mode during the race to deflate the tyre s and t ake a s hort-cut. The Range Rover& #39;s automa tic Terra in Resp onse System is demonstrated. James takes a lon ger route to ascend the hill but still wi ns the race. At the studio, th e trio consider the driv erless cars to be not ve ry practical. Star In A Reasonably Priced Car: James McAvoy drove th e Kia Cee'd around t he Test Tr ack with a la p of 1:43.6 despite having less experience of driving cars. He drove ov er grassy patch in t he last corner but mana ges to k eep the car under control.< br/> Challenge, P art 2: Jeremy and Richard road-t est th eir car at Christchurch, Dorset. The car ha s larg e front bumpers made up of foa m, large r ear-v iew mirrors, squeaking ball under the brake-pedal , large magnifying-glass on the da shboard, sat nav (voi ced by Richard Briers) with only four d estinatons . The car has an artificial cat on the roof which l ater fell over on the w ay of Bingo hall. Richard later shows his system t o find the location of park ed ca r (the car activate s a fla re and t hen releases a balloon). Jeremy shows that the radio only plays Horse of the Year Show theme on a loop, which both lat er find to be irre sistible to clap al ong. The nam e of the car is revealed t o be The James. They pick up three e lder ly ladies from a pensioners' home for road-te sting and d rive them to a bowling club where it is sh own that Rich ard fit ted the airba g at the rear fo r parking assist which i nflates the airbag on close pr oximity. Jeremy and Richard buy food for pi cnic, choosing only Bri tish foods. They attach the shoppin g trolley to Tow hi tch and head for picnic. T he roof of the car leaks as it rains. Jeremy and R ichard end up choosing a picn ic spot on roadsi de where t hey find the trolley to be damaged during reversing and the food to be soake d, however they ate the food which was not rui ned. T he next day bot h leave Christ chur ch and Jeremy sh ows his sy stem to pre vent the car from being driven on the wr ong side o f the r oad, the ca r ini tially sounds alarm and lat er the ty res, doors and other parts of the car explode which stops the c ar and renders it immobile. At the studio , James considers the heater to b e complicate d, the trio than k Ric hard Brie rs and announce the Africa special . 153 Seri es 19, Episode 6 3 March 201 3 No Guest F irst of the two-epi sode Africa Special, ta king place in Africa. Th e episo de was shot in 2012. Challeng e, Part 1: B uy use d estate ca rs for up to £1,50 0 in Britain and report at a small village in rural Uganda. Je remy arrives in a BMW 528i T ouring, Rich ard in a Subaru Impreza WRX Est ate and James in a Volvo 850R Wagon. The c hallenge is to find the true source of the river Nile. T hey set of f an discover th at exploring isn39;t as dif ficult as first tho ught when they go o n a ni ce easy drive and find Lake Vict oria, of whom the Victorian Explorers thought wa s the source of the N ile. However they are th en told that it i s not the actual sou rce of the Nile and t here were two other disputed locatio ns for it, one in Rwanda and one in Burundi. However, Jeremy Cl arkson insiste d that bot h of the se locations were wr ong and decid ed to head west towa rds Lake E dward to see wheth er there was a link betwe en that lake and La ke Kivu in Rwanda. In their j ourn ey west, where they visit the Entebbe Ai rport and from there see the Ford Sc orpio Esta te back -up car. They continue int o Kampala, Uganda's Capital City where they get held up in a traffic jam overnight, t he most hur rendous traffic they 9;d ev er seen. They continu e on well-ma intained highways west findi ng their trip incredib ly eas y before reaching the town of Mbarara in the southwest of the coun try, via a stop in Jezza, a village in Mpigi Distr ict. H ere th ey stay in a disgusti ng hot el, after driving through tea plantations in an attempt to discover a lovely teahouse hot el, which in the min d of Ric hard, was bound to found due to tea progra mmes he' d see n. In Mbarara th ey stayed in the Economic Lodge with Jere my hav ing a bed with faeces on it. They lef t the hotel disgu sted before Rich ard has the idea to make the cars 'hotel s'. James modifies his Volvo by adding a library, Richard adds a c ooker and Jeremy adds a coffin. The coff in he uses to put his clothes in, he sleeps on Eg yptian Cotto n. They lea ve for Lake Ed ward, camping overnigh t there because of its beau ty before heading in s earch of the river heading fo r La ke Kivu. None of the rivers connect the lake as they all head e ast rather tha n south. They give up, l eaving them disappointed. Then Jeremy looks at a map an d discov ers the source o f the Nile must be on the o ther side of Lake Victor ia. His reasoning is that the Mediterranean Sea is effe ctively an inland sea a nd so Gibraltar is the true mouth of the Nil e, rather than Ale xandria i n Egypt. After di scovering this they de cide that they must drive strai ght to t he other side of Lake Vic toria to get to the southea st coast in Tanzania nea r the Seren geti.
