Despite the massive twin-turbo e ngine and horsepower, thanks to its soph isticate d aerodynamic packag e, the car can easily be drive n hard without th e ris k of spinning. The Huayra also set the fastest t ime on the Top Gear Test Tr ack in the ha nds o f The Stig, 1:13.8, beat ing the previ ous recor d, set by the Ariel Ato m V8. New s: The Dacia Sande ro is now on sale in the UK. The Me rcedes -Benz SLS AMG Black has been update d to produce extra horsepower, but the handling i s still challenging. Jeremy claims t hat he has fo und a male equivalent ve rsion of Fifty Shades of Grey, prese nting a kid's book about tractors. The new Chevrolet Stingray is ann ounced. Jam es May turned fifty the previou s week. Also, the ral ly team composed of war am putees (prev iously mentioned in series 17, episode 6) fina lly completed their challenge of finishing the 2013 Dak ar Ral ly. Re view: James reviews the new Bentley Continental GT, and notes the n ew engine and subtle ride ch aracteristics. Believing th at the B entley, wi th f our whe el drive s ystem and a big, po werf ul engine, can han dle things w orse than a Welsh co untry side road, James takes the c ar onto a Welsh stage of the Wo rld Rally Champion ship, with Kris Meeke behi nd the whee l, and James be ing the c o-driv er. Despite the ca r having less grip, more wei ght, an electronic handbrake (unsuitable for usage on a rally stage) and Ja mes not being p roficient at giving pace no tes, th e Bentley was actually faster than one of the full WRC cars. Jeremy cheers Damia n up by mak ing a separate board for snow (he justs put the time underne ath and to t he side of the fas test la p time on that b oard) and says th at he is the fastest driver ever on their "snow board". Challenge: Jere my at tempts to build a ca r smaller than the Peel P50, na ming his creation the P45. It w as based on a quad bike, with bodywork f itted, designed to wrap around t he driver. H e then presented his idea to the 9;Dra gons 39; in a D ragons' Den s tyle format. All of th e dragons declare th emselves "out" and b ack in the s tudio, Richard c onclude s that for t he P4 5 to b e put in pr oductio n, Jeremy would have to be d ead. 1 49 Series 19, Episode 2 3 Feb ruary 2013 Mick Fleetwood Chall enge, Part 1: In anoth er challen ge, the pre senters picked three super cars to take on an epic race. Since it was Hammond's tu rn to select the challenge location, the team went to the Western Uni ted St ates. Jeremy selec ted the Lexus LFA, James chose th e new Aston Martin Vanquish, and Richard took the SR T Vipe r. After a brief drive in the Nevada desert, the tr io hea ded to L as Vegas Motor Speedway, specifi cally the drag strip, to compete in drag races organi zed by the Las Vegas P olice Depar tment; whom org anized i t with the the ory that allowing pe ople to d rag race, legally, at a closed circuit , would prev ent street racing . De spite t he high performance o f their cars, the trio were beaten b y modifie d production cars , an d 4WD cars , in each of the ir drag races. N ews: Jeremy comes up wit h a solution on how to solve the cr isis affecti ng B ritain's town centres : sacking all traffic w ardens an d removin g dou ble y ellow lines. The trio then review a Chinese prod uct designed t o stop dro wsiness behind the wh eel, before they took a fi rst look at the 2013 Jaguar F-Type. The y prais ed its styling, but c ritic ized its high pri ce tag of £60,000 , as well as its target au dien ce. J ames ment ions Peu geot Citro en's car intended to run o n compre ssed air; J eremy attempted to use a fire extinguish er to demonstrate, but failed after on ly causing himself to turn slowly arou nd. Challenge, Part 2.: After leaving Las Vegas, Jame s and Richard m ake fun of Jeremy 39;s LFA for la cking not only Bluetooth connection and iPod connectors, but cup holders, despite being the most expensive car. They are then t asked to head to Willow Springs International Motor spor ts Park, but they instead stop o n a grooved road, wh ere each c ar drives over the grooves and produces notes. W hen the y reach Wi llow Springs, they are for ced to play an aerial version of La ser Quest, where they would dri ve 5 laps ar ound the tr ack, whilst being cha sed by two Aerma cchi SF.260 armed with laser guns. In t he end, James won the challe nge by bein g hit only 17 times. Star in a Reasonab ly Pric ed Ca r: Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleet wood dr ove the Kia Cee 39;d around the Test Track with a lap of 1:45 .4. Challenge, Part 3: Departing Willow Springs, the g roup headed for Los Angeles, Calif ornia. In order to do "re al worl d" testing, Rich ard devised a challenge to see wh o could burn the b est elevens. The three instead ended up drawing a phallus a nd left L A. T he team then stayed for a night in Palm Spring s. However, the produ cers gave them a final cha llenge. The three would drive from Palm Spring s to the Mexi can border at Cale xico the following morning, and the last to make it to the Me xican bord er w ould have to travel in to the cou ntry its elf to drive t he Mastr etta MXT, a Mexican sports car made fun o f by the presente rs in an earlier se ries, for a later segm ent on the show. In revenge for tak ing them to America, Jer emy and James sabotaged Hammond';s Viper, c ausing him to lose 10 minutes in the race. De spite making a stop for fuel, Jeremy made it to the finish line first, with James in second . Richard then wal ked to the border being the last person to arrive. At the st udio, Ja mes and Jerem y en d by saying that the Viper was aw ful and t hat the Vanquish and LFA were amazing. 150 Series 1 9, Epi sode 3 10 February 2013 Amy Macdonald Review: Jeremy re views the To yota GT86 and the Subaru BRZ. The cars are almost identical, but Jeremy prefers t he Toyota G T86. The St ig then comp leted a la p of the Test Track in 1:3 1:3. News: They discuss the n ew Subaru Imp reza, which is not coming to UK, and they t hen ta lk ab out t he new Maser ati Quattropor te. C hallenge, Part 1 : The producers have reserved a single ticke t to a fo otball match at the San Siro in Mil an, Northe rn Ital y. The trio have a race from Wembley Stad ium to the S an Siro. Jer emy drives t he Sh elby Mustang GT500 and Rich ard and James travel on public tr ansport. Sim ilar to the p revious race to Monte Carlo, Richard and James are not allowed to use an y cars, and Je remy is not allow ed to use any trains. According t o Jeremy, si nce the l ast epic race, the trains ha ve become faster and boats have b ecome slower . Richard and James opened up a big lead whils t travellin g on the Eurostar, and arriv e in Paris while Jeremy was still crossing the English Channel on a ferry. After reach ing France, Jeremy discovers that the Mustang only hold s 50 litres in its fue l tank. A fter leavi ng Paris , Rich ard a nd James discuss what to do upon arriving in M ilan — as there are t wo of the m but onl y one tic ket. Hund reds of miles behind, Jeremy ends pa rt 1 of the cha llenge stating out loud, " ;I'm go nna lose!" Star in a Reasonably Priced Car : Amy Macdonald drove the Kia Cee';d a round the Test Track i n 1:44 .4. During one of her practi ce runs, Amy acc iden tally destroyed one of the runway lights, which Jeremy gives to her a fter r evealing the lap time. Challenge, Part 2: The high speed TGV slowed down as it approached the mountai ns that surround Northern Italy . Jere my began to catch up and was nearly neck and neck with the train, until road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him do wn. The tr ain starts to accelerate again and reach es Northern Italy ahead of Jeremy. Richard and James use a tube network to get to th e streets near the finish line . James maintains his opposition to run on telev ision and Richard runs off alone to find the finish line, which is at a bar in the IM V illa Veuve Cliequot. James th en assemb led a bike w hich he had hidden in one of his bags and rides to the bar, only to find that Richard i s alrea dy there and has won the race and the t icket to the football match . Mome nts lat er, Jeremy arrive d and accepted def eat for the first time ever in an epic race of all the series . 1 51 Series 19, Episode 4 17 February 201 3 Lewis Hamilton Review: Jeremy reviews the Vauxhall Astra VXR, Ford Focus ST and Renault Megane Renault Sport Cup. The Stig did laps of each car, the F ocus being the slowest at 1:29.6, the Astra VXR at 1:28. 3, and the Megane in 1:27.7. Despite this, Jeremy chose the As tra VXR as the best overall car of the three. News: They discu ss the newest cars, such as the A lfa Romeo 4C, the next generation Ford Mustang would be sold in Great Britain, but the UK version wou ld come w ith a 2.0 EcoBoos t engine, and the importance of the handbrake turn in "male deve lopment&quo t;. Review: Jeremy tests the all new Kia Cee'd, putting i t through a myriad of strange road tests. In cluding Matt LeBlanc do ing a lap with both the old and new Cee'd, Bruce Willis (in c haracter as John McClane) testing the horn of t he Cee39;d, Eri c Clapton t esting its auxiliary input jack, and Jeremy testing the Cee& #39;d's self parallel parking f eature. Jeremy demonst rates the co mplexity of modern cars' ; dshboard. Richard brings a Fiat Mu ltipla an d bot h modify it. Jeremy b reaks t he dashboard and replaces it consider ing it to be too co mplicated for elders. Richard asks f or the airbags sayin g that it i s dan gerous for the elderly who are as del icate as childre n, and that he ne eds it for a sa fety featur e. Jeremy mak es a speedometer which reads 20 mph at the to p speed, he also uses an old design switch for rear fo g light whic h does no thing. Jer emy insta lls a pet-cage and replaces the back seat with high seat chairs and the Fiat badge with a Rov er one. They pa int it in beige after observing the shade of a hearing aid. Richar d us es wate r-resistant fabric as seat covers, and w hile stitching hurts his eye. T hey complete the car and end the part 1 with Richar d wearing heavy bandages over his left eye. N ews: Vol kswagen will launch GTI vers ion of the new Golf and GT version of Up will be launched. Ki a will launch the Pr o Cee' d GT. The Mini Pacem an is launched, a nd the trio mock the front e nd o f th e car, claim ing th at it looks depressin g. Th e trio agr ee that the British are the best drivers. Alfa-Romeo release s photographs of t he Gloria , in which the trio make fun of it's n ame. Richard had arr ived late so James and Jere my had attempted t o pla y tennis wit h cars (wh ich has a lot of editing). Review: James rev iews the new Range Rov er in London. The new car is co mplete ly redesigned, 400 kg lighter due to Aluminium body, has active sus pension, new gearbox , mini malist dashboard and of fers better comfort . James then races it a gains t TerraMax at Nevada Automotive Test Centre, Ne vada. The ra ce was to a hill 1 0 mil e acr oss, passing t hrough rocky terra in, hillock, mud, river and sand- tracks. TerraMax w as switched to drone mode du ring the race to deflate the ty res and take a short -cut. The R ange Rover's automatic Terrai n Response System i s demonstrated. James takes a longer route to a scend the hill bu t still wins the race. At the studio, the tri o consid er the driverless cars to be not ve ry practical. The car has large fro nt bum pers made up of foam, large r ear-view m irrors, squeaking ball under the brake-p edal, large magnifying-glass on the das hboard, sat nav (voiced by Richa rd Briers) with only four destinatons. Th e car has an artif icial c at on the roof which later fell over on t he way of Bingo hall. Richard later shows his sys tem to find the l ocatio n of parke d car (the car activat es a f lare and the n releases a balloon). Jerem y shows tha t the radi o on ly plays Horse of the Year Show t heme on a loop, which bot h lat er find to be irresistible to clap a long. The na me of the car is re vealed to be The James. T hey pick up three el derly ladies from a pen sioners 39; home fo r road-testing and drive them to a bowling club where it i s shown that Richard fitted th e airbag at the rear for parking assist w hich infl ates the airbag on close proximity. Jeremy and Ric hard buy food for picn ic, choosing only Br itish foo ds. They attach the s hopping trolley to Tow hitch and head for picnic. The roof of the car le aks as it rains. Jeremy and Richard end up choosing a picnic spot on roadside wher e they fi nd the trolley to be damaged dur ing reversing and th e food to be soaked, however they ate th e food which was not ruined. The next day both leave Christchurc h and Jeremy shows hi s system to preve nt the car from being driven on the wro ng side of the road, the car i nitially sounds al arm and later the tyres, doors and other parts of the car explode which stops th e car and renders it i mmobile. At the studio, James co nsider s the h eater to be complicated, the trio thank Richard Briers and announce the Africa special. 153 Series 19, Episode 6 3 M arch 2013 No Guest First of the two-epis ode Africa Specia l, tak ing place i n Africa. The e pisode was shot in 2012. Chal lenge, Pa rt 1: Buy used e state ca rs for up to £1,5 00 i n Br itain and report at a small village i n rural Uganda. Jer emy arrives in a BMW 52 8i T ouring, Richard in a Subaru Impreza W RX Estate and James in a Volvo 850R Wagon. The challenge is to find the true source of the river Nile. They set off an discover th at exploring is n' t as diffi cult as first thought when they go on a nice easy d rive an d find Lake Victoria , of whom the Victo rian Explor ers t hought was the sour ce of the Nile. However they are then told that it is not the actual source of the Nil e and there were two other d isputed locations for it, one in R wanda and o ne i n Burundi. However, Jer emy Clarks on insisted that both of these locations w ere wrong and decided to head we st towards L ake Edward to se e whether the re was a link betw een that lake and Lake Kivu in Rwanda. In t heir jo urney west, where the y visit the Entebbe A irport and f rom there see the Ford Scorpio Es tate back -up car. They continue into Kam pala, Uganda's Capital City where they get held up in a traff ic jam overn ight, the mo st hurren dous traffic they 'd ever seen . They continu e on we ll-maintaine d highw ays w est finding their trip incredibly easy before reaching the town of M bara ra in t he southwe st of the coun try, via a stop i n Jezza, a village in Mpigi Distric t. Her e they stay in a disg usting hotel, after driving through tea pl antations in an attempt to disco ver a lovely t eahous e hotel, which i n the mind of Richard, was bound to found due to t ea progr ammes he' d seen. In Mbarara they stayed in t he Economic Lodge with Jeremy having a bed w ith faeces on it. The y le ft the hotel disgusted before Richard has the idea to make t he cars 'ho tels'. James modi fies his Volvo by adding a l ibrary, Richard adds a cooke r and Jeremy adds a coff in. The co ffin he uses to put his clothe s in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cotton. They leave for La ke Edwa rd, campi ng o vernight there be cause of its beau ty before h eading in sea rch of t he river heading for Lake Kivu. None of the rivers connect the lake as they all he ad east r athe r than so uth. They give up, leaving them disappointed. Then Jer emy looks at a map and discovers the source of the Nile must be on th e oth er side o f Lake V ictoria . His r easoning is th at th e Medite rrane an Sea is eff ective ly an i nland sea and so Gibraltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rath er than Alexa ndria in Egypt. After discover ing this they decide tha t they must dr ive straight to th e other sid e of Lake Victoria to get to the southeas t co ast in Ta nzania near the Se reng eti.
