Challenge: Jeremy a ttempts to build a ca r smaller than the Peel P5 0, naming his creation the P45. It was based on a quad bike, with bodywork fitt ed, designed to wrap around the driver. Since it was Hammond's turn to select the challeng e locatio n, the team went to the Weste rn United States. Jeremy selected the Lexus LFA, James chose the new As ton Martin Vanquis h, and Richard took th e SRT Vi per. After a brief d rive in the Nevada desert, t he trio headed to Las Vegas Motor Spe edway, specifical ly the drag strip, to co mpete in d rag races organize d by the Las Vegas Polic e Department; wh om organized it wi th t he theo ry tha t allowing people t o drag race , legally , at a closed circuit, would prevent street racing. Despi te the high perfor mance of their car s, the trio were beaten by modified producti on cars, and 4WD cars, in each of th eir drag races. News: Jeremy com es up with a solution on how to sol ve the crisis affecting Britain 9;s town centres: s acking all traffic w ardens a nd rem oving doubl e yellow lines. The tri o then review a Chines e product designed to stop drow sines s behind the wheel , before they took a first look at t he 2013 Jaguar F-T ype. They praised its styling, but criticized it s high price tag of £60 ,000, as well as its t arget audie nce. James m entions Peugeot Citroen&# 39;s car intended t o run on compressed air; Jeremy a ttempted to use a fire extinguisher to demonstrate, but failed after only cau sing himsel f to t urn slowly around . In the end, James won the challenge by being hit only 17 times. Star in a Reasonably Priced Ca r: Fle etwo od Mac 9;s Mick F leetwood drove the Kia Cee'd around the Test Tra ck with a lap of 1: 45.4. Challenge, Part 3: Departing Willow Springs , the group headed for Los Ange les, Califo rnia. In order to do & quot;real world" test ing, Richard de vised a challenge to see who c ould burn the best elevens. The three instea d ended u p drawin g a ph allus and left LA. The team then st ayed fo r a night in Palm Springs. H owever, the producers gave them a final cha llenge. Th e three would dri ve from Palm Spring s to the Mexican border a t Calexico the followin g morning, and the last to make it to the Me xican border would have to travel into the country itself to drive the Mastre tta M XT, a Mexic an s port s car made fun of by the pr esenters in a n earli er series, for a later segment on the show. In reven ge for taking them to America, Jeremy and James sabotage d Hammond' s Viper, causing him to lose 1 0 minutes in the race. De spite makin g a stop for fuel, Jeremy made it t o the finish li ne firs t, with James in second. Richard th en walked to the border being the la st person to arrive . The cars are almost id entical , but Jeremy pre fers the Toyot a GT86. Th e Stig then co mpleted a lap of the T est Track in 1:31:3 . News: They dis cuss the new Subaru Im preza, which is not co ming to UK, and they then talk about th e new Maserati Qu attro porte . Cha llenge, Part 1: The producers hav e reserved a single t icket to a f ootball m atch at the San Siro in Milan , Northern Italy. T he t rio hav e a r ace from Wembley Stadium to the San Siro. Jere my drives the She lby Mustang GT500 and Richard and Ja mes travel on public transport. Similar t o the pr evio us ra ce to Monte Carlo, Richard and James are not a llowed to use any cars, and Jeremy is not allowed to use any trains. Acc ording to Jere my, since the last epic race, the trains have b ecome fas ter and boa ts have be come sl ower. Richard and James opened up a big lead whilst tra velling on the Eurostar, and arrive in Paris w hile Jeremy wa s still crossing the Eng lish Channe l on a ferry. Af ter rea ching France, Jeremy discov ers tha t the Mustan g only holds 50 litres i n its fuel tank. After leaving Paris, Richard and James discu ss what to do upon arr iving i n Milan — as there are two of them but only one ticket. Hundreds o f miles beh ind, Jeremy ends part 1 of the chal lenge stating out loud , "I 9;m gonna los e!" During one of her practice runs, Amy accidentally destroyed o ne of the runway lights, which J eremy gives to her after revealing t he lap time. Challeng e, Part 2: The high spe ed TGV slowed down as it approached the mountains that surround Nort hern It aly. Jeremy began to catch up and was nearly neck and n eck with the train , until ro ad works at the Mont Blanc Tunn el slow him down. The train starts to ac celerat e again an d reaches Northern Italy ahea d of Jeremy. Richard and James use a tu be network to get to the streets near the fi nish line. James maintains his opposit ion to run o n televisi on and Richard run s off alone to find the finish line, which is at a ba r in the IM Villa Veuve Cli equot. James th en as sembl ed a bike whic h he had hidden in one o f hi s bags an d rides to the bar, only to find that Richard is already there a nd has won the rac e and the tick et to the foot ball match. Jeremy demonstrat es the complexity of modern ca rs' dshb oard. Richard brings a Fiat Multi pla and both modify it. Jeremy breaks t he dashboard and repl aces it consi dering it to be t oo complica ted for elders. Richa rd asks for the airbags saying that it is dangerous for the elderly who are as delicate as ch ildren, and that he needs it for a s afety feature. Jeremy m akes a speedom eter which re ads 20 mph at the top speed, he a lso uses an old design switch fo r rear fog light w hich does nothing. Jeremy installs a pet-c age and replaces the back seat with high seat c hairs a nd the Fi at badge with a R over o ne. The y paint it in beige after observ ing th e shade of a hearing aid. Richard uses water-resistant fabric as seat c over s, and whi le stit ching hurt s his eye. They comp lete the car and end the part 1 with Rich ard wearing hea vy ba ndages over his left eye. News : Volkswage n will laun ch GTI versi on of the new Gol f and GT ve rsion of Up will be laun ched. Kia will launch the Pro Cee&# 39;d GT. The Min i Paceman i s launch ed, and the trio mock t he front end of the c ar, claim ing that it looks de pressing. The trio agree that the Bri tish ar e the best d rive rs. Alfa-Romeo releases photograph s of th e Gloria, in which th e trio make fun of it's nam e. R ichar d had arrived late so James and Jeremy had att empted t o play tennis with cars (wh ich has a lot of editing). Review: James r eviews the new Ra nge Rover i n London. T he new car is completel y redes igned, 400 kg light er due to Al uminium body, has active susp ension, new gearbox, minimalist dashboar d and offer s better comfort . James th en races i t against T erraMax at Nevada Automot ive Test Cen tre, Nevad a. The rac e was to a hill 10 mi le across, passing through roc ky ter rain, hill ock, mud, river and sand- tracks . Ter raMax was switched to drone mode during the ra ce to deflat e the tyres and take a short-cut. The Ran ge Rover 's auto matic Terrain Response System is demonstrated. James ta kes a longer route to ascend the hi ll but stil l wins the race. At the studio, the trio consider the driverles s cars to be not very p racti cal. Star In A Reasonably Pric ed Car: Ja mes McAvoy drove the K ia Ce e';d around th e Test Tra ck with a lap of 1:43.6 despit e having less experience of d riving cars. He drove ove r grassy patch in the last corner but manages to keep the car under control. Challen ge, Part 2: Jeremy a nd Richard road-test their car at Christchur ch, Dorset. The car has large front bum pers made up of foam, large rear-view mirrors, squeaking ball under the brak e-peda l, large m agnif ying-glass on the dashboard, sat nav (vo iced by Richard B riers) with only four destinato ns. The car ha s an ar tifi cial cat on the roof which later fel l over on the way of Bingo hall. Rich ard lat er shows his system to find the location of park ed car (the car activates a flare and the n releases a balloon). Jeremy shows that the rad io only plays Horse of the Ye ar Sho w theme on a loop, whic h both later find t o be irres istible to clap al ong. The n ame of the car is r evealed to be The James. They pi ck up thre e elderly ladies fr om a pensioners' home for road-testing and drive them to a bowling club where it is s hown that Richard fitted the airbag at the rear fo r pa rking assist which inflates the airbag on cl ose proxim ity. Jeremy and Richard buy food for picnic, choosin g only British foods. They att ach the shopping trolle y to Tow hitch and head for picnic. The roof of the car leaks as it rains. Jer emy and Richard e nd up choo sing a picnic spot on roadsid e where they f ind the t rolley to be dam aged du ring reversing and the food to be soake d, howev er they ate t he food which was not ruin ed. The next day bot h leave Christchurch an d Jerem y shows his system t o prevent the car from b eing dr iven on t he wrong sid e of th e road, the ca r initially s ounds alarm a nd later t he tyres, doors an d ot her parts of the c ar explode which stops the car and renders it immobile. At the studio, James considers the heater to be complicated, the trio tha nk Richard B riers an d announce the Africa special. 153 Serie s 19, Episode 6 3 March 201 3 No Guest First of the two-episode Africa S pecial, taki ng place in Africa. The epi sode was shot in 2012. Chal lenge, Part 1: Buy us ed es tate cars for up to £1,500 in Br itai n and repor t at a small village in rural Ug anda . Jerem y arrives in a BMW 528i Touring , Richard in a Su baru Impreza WRX Estate an d James in a Volvo 850R Wagon. The challenge is to find the true so urce of the river Nile. They set off an discover th at explo ring isn't as difficult as first thought when they g o on a n ice eas y drive and find Lake Victoria, of whom the Vic torian Ex plorers thought was the source of the Nile . However they are then told that it is not t he actual source of the Nile and there were two other disputed locations for it, o ne in Rwanda and one in Burundi. Howeve r, Jeremy Clarkson i nsiste d that both of the se loc ations we re wrong and decid ed to head west towar ds Lake Edward to see whether ther e was a li nk between th at lak e and Lake Kivu i n Rw anda. In their jour ney west, where they visit the Entebbe Ai rport and from there see the Ford Scorpio Estate back-up car. The y continue into Kampala, Uganda';s Capital Cit y whe re they get held up in a traf fic jam overnight, t he most hurrendous traffic the y'd ever se en. They continue on well-mainta ined highways west finding t heir trip incred ibly easy befor e re aching the town of Mbarara in the southwest of the countr y, via a stop i n Jezza, a vill age in Mpig i District. Here they s tay in a disgusting hot el, after drivin g through tea plan tations in an attempt to discover a l ovely teahouse hotel, whic h in the m ind of Ric hard, was boun d to found d ue to tea prog rammes he& #39; d see n. In Mbarara they stayed in the E conomic Lo dge with Jeremy having a b ed with faeces o n it. The y left the ho tel disgusted bef ore Ri chard has the idea to m ake the cars ' ;hotels'. James modifies his Volvo by adding a library, Ri chard a dds a c ooker and J eremy adds a co ffin. Th e coffin he uses to put his clothes in, he s leeps on Egyptian Cotton. They leave for Lake Edward, camp ing overnig ht there because of its beauty befor e head ing in search of t he river heading for Lake Kivu. None of the rivers connect the lake as they all hea d east rather than south. The y give up, leaving them disa ppointed. Then Jere my looks at a ma p and discov ers the source of the Nile m ust b e on the ot her side of Lake Victoria. His reasoning is that the Mediterranean Sea is eff ectiv ely an inlan d sea and so Gibraltar is the true m outh o f the Nile, r ather than Alexandria in Egypt . After discovering this they decide that the y must drive s traight to the other side of Lake Vic toria t o get to th e southeast coast in Ta nzania nea r the Sere ngeti.
