New s: The D acia Sandero is now on sale i n the UK. T he Mercedes-Benz SLS AM G Black has been updated to produce extra horsepower, but the handling is stil l challenging. J eremy claims that he has found a ma le equi valent versi on of Fifty Shades of Grey, pres enting a kid' s book a bout tractors. The new Chevrolet Stingray is ann ounced. James May turned f ifty the pre vious week. Also, the rally t eam composed of w ar amputees (previ ously m entioned in serie s 17, episode 6) finally completed their cha llenge of fi nishing the 2013 Dakar Rally . Review: James reviews the new Bentle y Continental GT, and note s the new e ngine and subtle ride char acteristics. Believing that the Bentley, with four wheel drive sy stem and a big, powerful engine, can handl e things worse than a Welsh country side r oad, Ja mes takes the car onto a Welsh stage of the World Rally Cham pionship, with Kris M eeke behind the wheel , and James being the co-driver. Despite the car having less grip, more weight, an electronic handbrake (unsuitable for usag e on a ral ly stage) an d James not being proficient at giving pace not es, the Be ntley was actually faster than one of the fu ll WRC ca rs. Star In A Reasonably Pri ced Car: Damian Lewis takes his turn in the car, and drifts the Kia Cee'd around the snow-coated test track and crosses the finish l ine sideways , settin g the sl owest ever time of 2:09.1. Jeremy cheers D amian up by making a separ ate board for snow (he justs put the time undern eath and to the side of the fastest lap time on that board ) and says that he is the faste st driver ever on their &quo t;snow boa rd". Chall enge: Jeremy attempts t o build a car smalle r tha n the P eel P50, naming his creat ion t he P45. It wa s based on a quad bike, with bodywor k fitted, designed to wrap around the driver. He then presented his idea to the 39;Dragons39; in a Dragons' Den s tyle format. All of the dragons declare themselve s "out" and back in the studio, Richard concludes t hat fo r the P45 to be pu t in prod uction , Jeremy would have to be dead. 149 Series 19, Episode 2 3 February 2013 Mick Fleetwo od Challenge, Part 1: In ano ther challe nge, the pres enters picked three super cars to take on an epic race. Since it was H ammond 39;s turn to select the challenge location, the team went to the Western Un ited States. Jeremy sel ected the Lexus L FA, James cho se the n ew Aston Martin Vanquish, and Richar d took the SRT Viper. After a br ief drive i n the Nevada desert , the trio h eaded t o Las Vegas Motor Speedway, specif ically the drag strip, to c ompete in drag races organized by the Las Vegas Polic e Departmen t; whom organ ized it wi th the theory that allowing people to drag rac e, legally, at a closed circuit, would prevent street racing. Despite the h igh performa nce of their cars, the trio were b eaten by modified product ion cars , and 4WD cars, in each of t heir drag races. News: Jeremy co mes up w ith a solution on ho w to solve the cri sis aff ecting Britain39;s town c entres: sacking all traffic wardens and removing doub le yellow lines. The trio then review a Chinese product designed to stop drowsines s behind the wheel, befo re they took a firs t look a t the 2013 J aguar F-Type. They p raised it s styling, but c riticized it s high price tag of £60,0 00, as well as its target a udience . James m entions P eugeot Citroen's car intended t o run on compressed air; J erem y attempted to use a fire extinguisher to demonstrate, but failed after only causing himself to turn slowly around. Challenge, Part 2.: Aft er leaving Las Vegas, Jam es and Richard make fun o f Jeremy39;s LFA f or lacking not only Bl uetooth co nnection and iPod connectors, but cup ho lders, despite be ing the most e xpensive car . They are then tasked to head to Willow Spri ngs International Motorsports Park, but th ey instead stop on a grooved road, where ea ch car d rives over the grooves and produces no tes. When they reach W illow Spring s, they are forced to play an aerial version o f Laser Quest, where th ey would drive 5 laps around the trac k, whils t being chased by two Ae rmacchi SF.260 armed with laser guns. In the en d, J ames won the challenge b y bei ng hit only 17 ti mes. Star i n a Reas onably Priced Car: Fleetwood Mac 39;s Mick F leetwo od drov e the Kia Cee& #39;d around the Tes t Track with a lap of 1:45.4. Challenge, Part 3: Departing Willow Sp rings, the g roup headed for Los Angeles , California. In ord er to do "real world" ; testi ng, Richa rd devised a challenge to see who cou ld burn the best elevens. The three instea d ended up dra wing a phallus and left LA. The team th en sta yed for a night in Palm Springs. However, the producers gave them a final chall enge. The th ree would drive fro m Palm S prings to the Mex ican border at Calexico the following mornin g, and the last to make it to t he Mexican border would have to travel in to the country itself to driv e the Mast retta M XT, a Mexican sports car made f un of by th e presen ters i n an earlier series, for a later segm ent on the sho w. In revenge for taking them to Ame rica, Jer emy a nd James sabotaged H ammond' s Vip er, causin g him to los e 10 minut es in the race. Despite making a stop for fue l, Je remy made it to the finish l ine first, with Jame s in seco nd. Richa rd then walked to the borde r being the last person to arrive. At t he studio, James and Jeremy end by saying that the Viper was awfu l and that the V anquish and LFA were amazing. 150 Series 19, Episode 3 10 February 2013 Amy Macdona ld Re view: Jerem y reviews the Toyota GT86 and the Subaru BRZ. The cars are al most identical, but Jeremy prefer s the Toyo ta GT86. The Stig th en comp leted a lap of the Test T rack in 1:31:3. N ews: They discuss the new Subaru Impreza, which is not coming to UK, and they then talk about the new Maserati Quattroporte. Challen ge, Part 1: The pr oducers have reserved a single ti cket to a footbal l match at the San Si ro in Milan, Northern It aly. The trio have a ra ce fro m Wembl ey S tadium to the San Siro. J eremy drives the Shelby Mustang GT5 00 and Richard and J ames travel on public transport. Similar to the previous race to Monte Carlo, Richard and James are not all owed to use any car s, a nd Jeremy i s no t allowed to use a ny trains. According to Jeremy, since the last e pic race, the trains have become fas ter an d boats have beco me slower. Richard an d James ope ned up a big lead whils t tra velling o n the Euro star, and arrive in P aris whil e Jer emy was still c rossing the English Channel on a ferry . After reaching France, Jeremy discovers that t he Mustang only holds 50 litres in i ts fuel tank. After leaving Paris , Richar d and J ames discuss wh at to do upon arrivi ng in Mila n — as there are t wo of th em but only on e ticket . Hundreds o f miles behind, Jeremy ends par t 1 of the chall enge s tating out loud, & quot ;I'm go nna lose!" Star in a Re asonably Priced Car: Amy Macdonald drov e the Kia Cee 39;d around the Test Track in 1:44. 4. During one o f her pra ctice runs, Amy accidental ly dest royed one of the runway lights, wh ich Jeremy g ives to her after revealing the lap time. Chal lenge, P art 2: The high speed TGV slowed down a s it approached the mou ntains that surround Nor thern Italy. Jeremy began to catch u p and wa s near ly nec k and neck with the train, until road wor ks at the M ont Blanc Tunne l slow him down. The train starts to accelerate again and reaches Northe rn Italy ahead of Jeremy. Richard and James use a tube net work to get to the streets near the finish line. James maintains his oppo sition to ru n on television and Richard runs off a lone to find the finish line, which is at a bar in t he IM Vill a Veuve Cl iequot. Ja mes the n assemble d a bike which he had hidde n in one of his bags and rides to the ba r, only to fin d that Richard is alread y there and has won the race and the ticket to the football match. Moments later, J eremy arrived and ac cepted defeat for the first time ever in an epic race of all the series. 15 1 Series 19, Episode 4 17 February 2013 Lew is Hamilton Review: Jere my rev iews the Vauxhall Astra VXR, Ford Focus S T and Renault Megane R enault Sport Cup. The Stig did laps of ea ch car, the Focus being the slowest at 1:29.6, the Astra VXR at 1:28.3, and the Megane in 1 :27.7. Despi te this, Jeremy chose the Astra VXR as th e best overall car of the three.< br/> Ne ws: They discuss the n ewest cars , such as the Alfa Romeo 4C, the next genera tion F ord Mustang would b e sold in Gr eat Britai n, but the U K version would come with a 2 .0 EcoBoost eng ine, and the impor tance of t he handbr ake turn in "m ale development&qu ot;. Review : As punishment fo r losing the previous race, Richard is forced to review the Mastretta MXT in Mexico. Mindi ng his words, he states that the MXT was an ambitious unde rtaking for the first -time manufacturer, but that it had its share of flaws. Challenge: Jeremy and James play car rugby using Kia Cee 'ds and Kia Sportages at Twicke nham Stadium and Stig in Vauxhall Astra Police car as the referee . Jer emy39;s team wins. 152 Series 19, Epis ode 5 24 February 2013 James McAvoy< br/> Challenge, Part 1: Jeremy and Richard attemp t to desi gn a car tar gete d at elde rly people. Jerem y dem onstrates the complexity of modern cars& #39; dshboard. Ri chard brings a Fiat Multipl a and both modify it . Jeremy breaks the dashb oard and replaces it conside ring it to be too complicat ed for elders. Richard asks for the airb ags saying tha t it is dangerous fo r the elder ly who ar e as delicate as children, and that he needs it for a safety fea ture. Jeremy makes a speedom eter which reads 20 mph at the top speed, he also us es an old de sign swit ch for rea r fog light which does nothing . Jeremy i nstalls a pet-cage and replaces the back sea t with high seat chair s and th e Fiat ba dge with a Rover one. They paint it in be ige aft er observin g the sh ade of a hearing aid. Richard uses water-resi stant fa bric as seat c overs, and while stitching hurts his eye. They co mplete the car and end t he part 1 with Richard wearing hea vy banda ges over his le ft eye. Ne ws: Volk swagen wil l launch GTI version of th e new Golf and GT version of Up will be launched. Kia will launch th e Pro Cee9;d GT. The Mini Paceman is l aunched, a nd the trio mock the front end of the car, claiming that it looks depre ssing. The trio agree that the Br itish are t he best dri vers. Alfa-Romeo releases p hotographs of the Gl oria, in which the trio make fun of it39;s name. Richa rd h ad arrived late so Ja mes a nd Jeremy had attempted to play tennis with cars (which has a lot of e diting). Review: James reviews the new Range Rover in L ondon. The new car is compl etely redes igned , 400 kg lighter due to Alumini um body, ha s active s uspension, new gearbox, mi nimalist dashboa rd and off ers be tter comfort. James then races it against Terr aMax a t Nevada Automotive Test Cent re, N evada. The race wa s to a hill 10 mile across, passing thr ough rocky terrain, hillock, mu d, river and sand-tracks. TerraMax was switched to dr one mode during the race to deflate the tyres and take a sho rt-c ut. The Range Rover's a utomatic Te rrain Respon se System is de monstrated. James takes a longer route to ascend the h ill but s till wins the race . At the studio, the trio consider t he driv erless cars to be not very practical. Star In A Reasonably Priced Car : James McAvoy drove the Kia Cee' d around the Te st Track wit h a lap of 1:43.6 despite havin g les s exper ience of driving cars . He dr ove over gr assy patch in the last corner b ut manages t o ke ep the car under con trol. Challeng e, P art 2: Jeremy and Ric hard road-test thei r car at Ch ristchurch, Dorset. T he car has large fr ont b umpers made up of foam, la rge rear -vie w mir rors, squeaking ball un der th e brake-p edal, large magnifying-glass on the das hboard, sat nav (voiced by Rich ard Briers) with only four destinatons. The car has an ar tificial cat on th e roof w hich later fell o ver on the way of Bingo hall. Ric hard later shows his system t o find the location of parked car (the car activ ates a flare a nd then r eleases a balloon ). Jeremy sh ows that the radio only p lays H orse of the Year Sh ow theme on a lo op, which both later find to be irresistible to c lap along. The nam e of the car is revealed to be The J ames. They pick up three eld erly lad ies from a p ensioner s' home for road-tes ting and drive them to a bowling club whe re it is shown that Richard fitted the airbag at the rear fo r par king assist which infl ates the airb ag on close proxim ity. Jeremy and Richard b uy fo od for picnic, choosing on ly British foods. They attach the shopping trolley to Tow hitch and head for picnic. T he roof of the car leaks as it rains. Je remy and Ric hard end up choosing a picnic s pot on roadside wher e they find the trolley to be dam aged during rever sing and the food to b e soaked, however the y ate the food which was not ruined. The nex t day both l eave Christchurch and Jeremy shows his system to prevent the car from be ing drive n on the wrong side of the r oad, the car initially sounds al arm and later the tyres, doors and other parts of the car e xplode wh ich stops the car an d renders it i mmobile. At the studio, James considers the heater to be complicated, the trio thank Richard Briers and anno unce the Af rica special. 153 Series 19, Episode 6 3 Ma rch 2 013 No Guest First of the two-episo de Africa Specia l, taking place in Afr ica. The episo de was shot in 2 012. Challenge, Part 1: Buy used estate c ars for up to £1,500 in Britain and rep ort at a small vill age in rural Uganda. Jer emy arrives in a BMW 528i Touri ng, Richard in a Subaru Im preza WRX Estate and James in a Volv o 850R Wagon. The chall enge is to find the true source of t he river Nile. They set off an discov er t hat expl oring isn39;t as difficult as first though t when they go on a ni ce easy driv e an d find L ake Victoria, of whom the Victorian Explorers th ought was t he source of the Nile. However th ey are then told that it is not th e actual source of the Nile and there were tw o oth er disputed locations f or it, on e in Rwanda and one in B urundi. However, Jeremy Clar kson insisted that both of these l ocations were wrong and de cided to head west towa rds Lake Edward t o see whether the re was a link between that lake and Lake Kivu in Rwanda. In their journey w est, where they visit the Entebbe Airport and from ther e see the Ford Scorpio Estate back-up car. They continue into Kampala , Ugand a's Capital City where t hey g et h eld up in a t raff ic jam overnight, the mo st hurre ndous traffic they'd ever seen. They continue on well-main tained highways wes t finding t heir trip incredibly easy before rea ching the t own of Mbarara in the southwest of the countr y, via a stop in Jezza, a v illage in Mpigi District. Here the y stay in a disgusting hotel, after driving through tea plantations in an attempt to disc over a lovely tea house hotel, which in the mind of Richard, was bound to found due to tea programmes h e' d seen. In Mbarara they s tayed in the Ec onomic Lodge with Jeremy having a bed wit h faeces on it. They left the hotel disguste d before Richard has the idea t o make the cars 39;hote ls'. James modifies h is Volvo by adding a library, Richard adds a cooker and Jeremy adds a coffin. The coffin he uses t o put his clothes in, he slee ps on Egyptian Cotton. They leave for Lake Edward, camping overnight there because of its beau ty bef ore headi ng i n searc h of the riv er heading for Lake Kivu. None of the riv ers connect the lake as they all head east rather than south. They give up, leaving them disappointed. Then Jeremy looks at a map and disc overs the s ource of the Nile must be on the other side of Lake Vict oria. His re asoning is that the Mediterr anean Sea is effectivel y an inland sea and so Gibra ltar is the true mouth of the Nil e, rather than Ale xand ria in Egypt. After discoverin g this they decide that they must drive strai ght to the other si de of Lake Victoria to ge t to the southeast coast in Tanzania ne ar t he S erengeti .
