Si nce it was Hammond' ;s turn to select the challe nge location , the team went to the Western United Stat es. Jeremy s elected th e Lexus LFA, James chose the new Aston M artin Vanquish, and Richard took the SRT Vi per. After a brief drive in t he Ne vada desert, the trio headed to Las Vegas Motor Speedw ay, specifically the drag strip, to compet e in drag ra ces organized by the Las V egas Polic e Department; whom organiz ed it with the theory th at al lowing people to drag race, legally, at a closed circuit, would p revent street rac ing. Desp ite th e high pe rformance o f their cars, the trio were beaten by modified pro duction cars, a nd 4WD cars, in eac h of their drag races. News: Jeremy com es up with a solutio n on how to solve the crisis affecting Britain's t own centres : sacking all traffic wa rdens and removin g double yellow lines. Th e trio then review a Chinese prod uct designed t o stop drowsiness behind the wheel, befor e they t ook a first l ook at the 2013 Jaguar F-Type. They praised its stylin g, but cr iticized its hig h pric e tag of £60,000, as we ll as its target audienc e. Star in a Reasonabl y Pr iced Car: Fleetwood Mac' ;s Mick Fleetwood drove the Kia Cee&# 39;d around the Test Track with a lap of 1:45.4. Challenge, P art 3: Departing Willow S prings, th e group headed for Los Angeles, California. In order to do & quot;real world" t esting, Richard devised a challenge to see who could burn the best elevens. The three instead ended up drawing a ph allus and left LA. The team then staye d for a night in Palm Springs. Howe ver, the producers gave the m a final challenge. T he three would drive from Palm Springs to the Mexican borde r at Cal exico the foll owing morning, an d the last to make it to the Mexic an borde r would have to travel into the co untry itself to drive the Mastretta MXT, a Mexican sports car mad e fun of by the presenters in an earl ier ser ies, for a later segment on the show. In revenge for taking them to A meric a, Jeremy and James sa botage d Hammon d's Vi per, causing him to l ose 10 minutes in th e race. The cars are almost identical, but Jeremy prefers the Toyota GT86. The Stig then completed a lap of the Test Tr ack in 1:31:3. N ews: They discuss the new Su baru Impreza, which is not comi ng to UK, a nd they then talk about the n ew Maser ati Quattroporte. Challenge, Part 1: The producers have reserved a single tick et to a football match at the San S iro in Milan , Northern Italy. The trio have a race from Wembley S tadium to th e San Siro. Jeremy dr ives the She lby Mustang GT500 and Rich ard and James trave l on publi c trans port. Similar to th e previ ous race to Monte Carlo, Richard and James are not allowed to use any c ars, and Jeremy is not allowed to use an y trains. A ccording to Jerem y, since the last epic race, the trains have become faster an d boats have become slower. Richa rd and James opened up a big lead whilst travelling on the Euro star, and arr ive in Pari s wh ile Jeremy was still cross ing the English Channel on a ferry. Afte r reaching France, Jeremy di scovers that the Mustang only holds 50 litres in its fuel tank. Afte r le aving Par is, Richard and James discuss what to do upon ar riving in M ilan — as there are two of them but only o ne ticket. Hundreds of miles behind, Jeremy ends part 1 o f the challenge stating out loud, "I'm gon na lose!" James maintains h is oppositio n to run on televis ion and Richard runs off alone to find the finis h line, which is at a b ar in the IM Villa Ve uve Cli equot. James then assembled a bike which h e had hidden in o ne of his bags and rides to the bar, only t o find that Richard is alr eady ther e and has won the race and the ticket to the foot ball ma tch. Mind ing his w ords, h e sta tes that the MXT was an amb itious undertaki ng for the first-t ime manufacture r, but tha t it had its share of flaws. Jeremy 9;s team wins. 152 Series 19, Episode 5 24 Fe bruary 2013 James McAvoy Cha llenge, Part 1: Jeremy and Richard atte mpt to design a car targeted at elderly people. J eremy demonstra tes the complexity of modern car s9; dshboard. Richard brings a Fiat Mul tipla and both mo dify it. Jere my breaks the dashb oard a nd replaces it con siderin g it to be too complicated for elders. Richard asks for the airbags sa ying th at it is dangerous for the elderl y who are as d elica te as chil dren, and that h e ne eds it for a safety feature . Jeremy makes a sp eedometer which reads 20 mph at the top s peed, he al so uses an old design switch for rear fog light which does n othing. Je remy installs a pet-cage and replace s the back seat with high seat chai rs and the Fiat badge with a Rover one. They paint it in beige aft er obs erving the shade of a hearing aid. Richard use s water-resistant fab ric as se at co vers, and while sti tchi ng hurts his eye. They complete the car and end th e part 1 with Richard wearing heavy bandages over his left eye. New s: Vol kswagen will launch GTI version of the ne w Golf and G T versio n of Up will be launched. Kia will launch the Pro Cee' d GT. The Mini Pa ceman is l aunched , and the trio moc k the f ront end of the car , claiming that it lo oks depressing . The tr io agr ee that the British are the be st dr ivers. Alfa-Romeo releases photographs of the Gl oria, in which th e trio make fun of it's name. Richard had arrived lat e so James and Jerem y had attempted to play tennis with cars (which has a lot of editing ). Review: James reviews t he new Range Rover in London. The new car is completely redesi gned, 400 kg li ghter due to Aluminium body, has active suspension , new ge arbox, minim alist dashboard and offers better comfort. James then rac es it ag ainst TerraMax at Nevada Automotiv e Test Centre, Nevada. The race was to a hill 1 0 mile a cross, passing through rocky terrai n, hillock, mu d, river an d sand-trac ks. TerraMax was switche d to drone mode durin g th e race to deflate th e tyres and take a short- cut. The Range Rover's automati c Te rrain Response System is d emonstrate d. James takes a longer route to ascend t he hill but still w ins the race. At the studio, the t rio cons ider the driverless cars to be not ver y practical. The car has large front bu mpers m ade up of foam, large rear -view mirr ors, squeaking b all under the brake-pedal, larg e ma gnifying-glass on the dashboard, sat nav (voiced b y Ri chard Br iers) with only four destin atons. T he car has an artificial cat on the roof which lat er fell over on the way of Bingo hall. Richard l ater shows h is system to fin d the location of parked car (th e ca r activates a flare a nd then releases a bal loon). Je remy shows that the radio on ly plays Hor se of the Year Show theme on a loop, which both later find to be irresistible to clap alon g. The name of th e car is r evealed to be The Jame s. They pick up three e lderly ladies from a pen sioners'; home for road-testing and drive them to a bowling club where it is sho wn t hat Ric hard fitted the airbag at t he rear for parking assist which infla tes the airb ag on close proximity. Jeremy and Richa rd buy food for picnic, choosing on ly Britis h foods. They attach the shopping troll ey to Tow hitch and head for picnic. The roof of the car leaks a s it rains . Jeremy and Richard end up choosing a picnic spot on ro adside w here they find the trolley to be damaged during reve rsing and the food t o be soaked, howe ver they ate t he food which was n ot r uined. The next day bo th lea ve Christchur ch and Jer emy shows his system to preven t the ca r fro m bein g driven on the wrong side of th e road, the car initially s ounds alarm and la ter the ty res, doors and other par ts of the car ex plode wh ich st ops the car and renders it immobile. At the s tudio, James considers the heater to b e complicated, the trio thank Richard Brie rs and a nnounce the Afric a special . 153 Series 19, Episode 6 3 March 2013 No Guest Fi rst of the two -episode Afr ica Special, taking place in Africa. The episode was sho t in 2012. Challenge, Part 1: Buy used estate cars f or up to £1,5 00 in Britain and rep ort at a small v illage i n rura l Ugand a. Je remy arr ives in a BMW 528i Touring, Richa rd in a Subaru Impreza WRX Estate and James in a V olvo 850R Wagon. The challenge is to find th e true sour ce of the river Nile. They set off an discove r that e xploring i sn't as difficult as first thought when they go on a nice easy drive and fi nd Lake Victoria, of whom the Vic torian Exp lorers thoug ht was the source of the Nil e. However they are then t old tha t it i s not the actual source of the Nile and ther e were two other disputed loc ations fo r it, one in Rwanda and one in Burundi. Howe ver, Jeremy Clarkson insisted that bo th of these locations were wrong and decided to head west towards Lake Edward t o see whether there was a link between that lake and Lake Kivu in Rwanda. In their jou rney west, w here they visit the Entebbe Air port and fro m there se e the Ford Scorp io Estate back -up ca r. They con tinue into Kampala, Uganda';s Capital City where th ey get held u p in a traff ic jam o vern ight , the mos t hurrend ous tr affic they' ;d ever seen. They continue on well-maintained highways west finding their trip incredibly easy before reaching the town of Mbarara in the southwest of the cou ntry, via a stop in Jezza, a village in Mpigi Dist rict. Here they stay in a disgust ing hotel, after driv ing t hrough tea plantations in an at tempt to discover a lovely teah ouse hotel, which in the mind of Richard, w as bound to found du e to tea programmes he';d seen. In Mbarara t hey stayed in the Econ omic Lodge with Jer emy having a bed with faece s on it. They lef t the ho tel disguste d be fore Richard h as th e idea to make t he cars 'hotels& #39;. Jame s modifies his Volvo b y adding a libra ry, Ric hard adds a cooker a nd Jeremy adds a coffin. Th e coffin he uses to put h is clothes in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cotton. They l eave for Lake Edward, camping overnight there because of its beauty before headi ng in search of the river heading for Lake Kivu . None of the rivers connect the la ke as they all head east r ather than south . Th ey give up, leavin g them disappointed. Then Jeremy looks at a map and discovers the source of th e Nile must be on the oth er side of Lake Victo ria. His reasoning is that th e Mediterranean Sea is effectivel y an inland sea and so Gibra ltar is the tr ue mouth of the Nile, rather than Alexandria in Eg ypt. After dis cover ing this they dec ide that they mus t drive straight to the other side of L ake Victoria to get to the southeast coast in Tanzania n ear t he Sereng eti.
