The Doll is an adap tati on of the novel, Th e Doll (novel) by Bolesław Prus , whic h is r egarded by many as o ne of the finest P olish nov els ever w ritten a nd, along with Pharaoh (nov el), made Bo lesław Pr us a p otential candi date for the Nobel Prize in l iterat ure. T he influen ce of Émile Zola is evi dent, and some have compared the novel to Ma dame Bovary by Gustave Flauber t; both were Prus 39;s con temporaries. The movie, however, may be more compared to Stendhal's Le Rouge et le Noi r, (The Red and the Black).< br/> The Doll constitutes a panorama of life in Wars aw between 1878 and 1879, and at the sa me time is a subtle story of three g eneratio ns of Polish idealists, t heir p sychological co mplications, their involvement in the histo ry of the ninetee nth century, social dramas, m oral problem s and the experien ce of tragic existence. At t he sam e time this story describes the disintegration of social relationshi ps and the growing separatio n of a society whose aristocratic e lite sprea ds the mode ls of vanity and i dleness. In th e ba d air of a back ward c ountry, anti-Semitic idea s are born, valuable i ndivid uals meet obstacles on th eir way, and scoun drels are success ful. This poeti c love sto ry follo ws a nouveau ri che m erchant, Stanislaw Wokulski, through a seri es of tr ials a nd trib ulations occasioned b y his obse ssive passion for an aristo cratic beaut y, Izabela Lecka, played by the f amous Po lish actress, Beata Tyszkie wicz. Plot: As a descendant of an imp overished Po lish noble family, young Wokuls ki is forced to work as a wa iter at Hopfer 's, a Warsaw restaurant, while dreaming of a lif e in science. After taking par t in the failed 1863 Uprising against Tsarist Russia, he is sentenced to e xile in S iberia. On event ual return to Warsaw, he becomes a sal esman at M incel's haber dash ery. Marrying t he late owner 9;s wi dow (who eve ntually die s), he comes into money and uses it to set up a par tnership w ith a Russian merch ant he had met while in exile. The t wo mer chants go to Bulgaria during the Rus so-Turkis h War of 1877-78 , and Wokulski makes a fortune supplying the Russian Army. The enterprising W okulsk i now pro ves a romantic at heart, falling in love wit h Izabela, daught er of th e vacu ous, bankrup t ar istoc rat, Tomasz Łę cki. In his quest to win Izabe la, Wokulski begins frequenting theat res and ar istocra tic salon s; and to help her financial ly distressed father, founds a company and set s the aristocrats up as shareholde rs in his bu siness.T he indole nce of the se aristocrats, who secure with their pensi ons, are too lazy to underta ke new business risks, frustrates Wokulski. His ability to make money is res pected but his la ck of family and social rank is cond escended to. Beca use of his "help" (in secret) to Izabela's impecunious but influen tial father, the gi rl becomes aware of his affection.
