The Doll is an adaptation of th e novel, T he Doll (novel) by Bole sław Prus, which is regarded b y ma ny as one o f the fi nest Polish novels ever written and, along with Pharaoh (novel), mad e Bolesła w Prus a potential candi date for the Nobel Prize i n literature. The influence of Émile Zola is evident, and some have compared the novel to Madame Bovary by Gustave Flau bert; both were Prus 's contemp oraries. The movie, however, may b e more compared to Stendhal's Le Rouge et le Noir, ( The Red and th e Black ). The Doll constitutes a panora ma of life in Warsaw bet ween 1878 and 1879, and at the same time is a subtle story of three gene rations of Polish idealist s, their psychologica l complications, their invol vemen t in the his tory of the ninet eent h century, social dramas, moral problems and th e experi ence of tragic exi stence. At the same time this story d escribes the disintegration o f soc ial relatio nships a nd the growing s eparation of a socie ty whose ari stocratic elite spreads the models of vanit y and idleness. In the bad air o f a backward country, anti-Semitic ideas are born, valuable individuals meet o bstacles on th eir way , and scoundrels are successf ul. This poetic love story follows a nou veau ric he me rchant, Stanislaw Wo kulski, thr ough a series of trials a nd tribu lations occasioned by his ob sessive p assion f or an aristo cratic beauty, I zabela Lecka, playe d by the famous Pol ish actress , Be ata Tys zkiewic z. Plot:< br/> As a descendant of an i mpoverished Polish noble family, young Wokulski is for ced to work as a waiter at Hopf er's, a Warsaw restauran t, while d reaming of a l ife in scien ce. After tak ing part in the failed 1863 Uprising again st Tsaris t Russia, he is sente nced to exi le in Siberia. On even tual return to Warsaw, he becomes a salesman at M incel39;s haber dashery. Marryi ng the late o wner's widow (who eventually dies), he comes into money and uses it to set up a partnership wit h a Russ ian merchant he had met while in exile. The two merchants go to Bulgari a during the Russo- Turkish War of 1877-78, and Woku lski makes a fort une suppl ying the Russi an Army. Th e ente rprising Wokulski now proves a ro mantic a t heart, fa lling in love with Izabela, da ughte r of t he va cuous, bankrupt arist ocrat, T omasz Łęcki. I n his que st to win Izabela, Wokulski begins frequenting the atres and aristocra tic salons; and to help her fina ncially distresse d father, founds a company and sets t he ari stocrats up as sharehol ders in his business.The indolence o f these aristocrat s, wh o secure with their pensions , are too lazy to undertake n ew bus iness r isks, frust rates Wokuls ki. His ability to make money is respected but his lack of fam ily and so cial rank is condescen ded to. Because of his "help" (in secret) to Izabel a's impecuni ous but influentia l father , th e girl becomes aware of his affection.
