Jack Li nden (Mark Ruffalo) and Hank E vans (Pe ter Krause) are best friend s wh o both teac h at the same university in a small New England town. They both have young ch ildre n and Jack 's wife , Terry (L aura Dern) is close with Hank's wife, Edith (Naomi Watts). But while things appear h appy o n the sur face, there are smould ering po ckets of discontent u nderneath. Financial s trugg le and domestic boredom has d rained the p assion from Jack an d Terry's marr iage, while Hank's num erous infi delities and self-absor ption has prompted Edith to fi nd both comfort an d sexual fulfilm ent with Jack.
