Novelist Joseph She aring specialized in using real cases which t ook place in Victorian England , alter ing them for fictional purposes. MOSS ROSE in 1947 was the first film to be m ade from his n ovels, then in 1948 two of his works were adapted for the screen, this film and THE MAR K OF CAIN. The movie stars Todd a s a recently widowed missionary returning t o her home in England from Jamaica. During the voyage, she meet s Milland, a charming though dangerous rascal who is wanted by police in connect ion with some u nsavory deal ings. Milland contracts malaria whi le onbo ard the ship and Todd n urses him b ack to health. In London, Todd settl es into her home, taking in boarder s to make ends meet. M illand arrive s, moves in, and proc laims his love for her. Todd is thrilled, but it s eems rathe r obv ious that Milland i s only toyin g with her. Mill and find s some lette rs writ ten to he r by her friend , Fitzgera ld, in which Fitzgerald reveals some of her sexual i ndiscreti ons. Since Fitzgerald is now married to the wealthy Huntley, M illand believes he can use the letter s to blackmail Fitzgerald. Todd's love for Milland is so great t hat she goes along with the plan. Hun tley, how ever, lea rns of t he scheme and also uncovers details of Millan d's shady past. Fearing for her lover's safety, Todd poisons Huntley, then remains silent when Fitzgerald is ar rest ed for the murder. Milland has by now ge nuinely fall en in love with Todd and the two make plans to leave E ngland. Be fore they ca n depart, one of Mill and's former lovers shows up and T odd, in a jealous rag e, kills Milland, then t urns hersel f into the police. This is an intriguin g fil m, although a little on the talky side. The performances are exc ellent th roughout, wi th Milland shini ng as the cad, the type of role in which he excel led. Though he spent most of his time m aking films in the US , he oc casionally returne d to his native Eng land for a production and this was his fir st British fil m sin ce FRENCH WITHOUT TEARS in 1939. Director Allen was al so an Englishman who chose to work in the US, t his bei ng his fir st directori al effor t in his homeland.
