The ship has been stuck in the doldrums for some time, bu t as soon as they break free i nto more pr omising w ater, the wind blows up suddenly, damagi ng the foremast and sending the ship ri ght back into t he stil l water. Mr Prett iman takes a hard fall and is la id up in his cabin, Miss Granham tends to him and the two announce t heir enga gement. A ship is sig hted in the dista nce. As everyone prepares for the e ncou nter with t he enemy Edmund hits h is head. He is ba dly hurt, but struggl es on. The ships draw close, but instead of brin ging an encounter with the enem y, it is The Alcyone, a Br itish ship cap tained by Sir Henry Somerset, they an nounce that the war is o ver. The two boats are tied together for a ball. Edm und m eets Sir H enry's wa rd, Marion, and immed iately falls in love. Bu t his head injur y takes it s toll and he fa lls un concious just as he was g oing to beg for her han d. After so me days he finally recovers, but the two ships have part ed and Marion is gone. Edmund's servant Wheeler was on b oard t he A lcyone. H e had spent four days in th e water aft er going ov erboard and had f inally been sp otted, rescued by the crew and e ventually returned to the or iginal sh ip. As they sail o n, there is yet more dam age as part of the keel falls from th e ship. The passengers start to panic, convi nced it wil l sink.
