Morse is taken seriously i ll at a museum reception and i s hospita lized. In the hospit al, Supt. Stran ge, visits Morse to push him to take early r etir ement, while D r. Millicen t 'Millie ' Va n Buren gives him her book on a 140 year -old co urt case known as the Ox ford Canal Murders. The case involved the murder an d rape of a youn g woman, Mrs Joanna Franks, traveling by canal boat from Coven try to London. The case resul ted in three boat men being senten ced to death and two of them ha nged. Morse s tarts to read Millie's book and dreams abo ut it. He s oon has a number of problems with the case. Why weren't the three men also cha rged wit h theft Why did Mrs Fran ks take a boat instead of a train t hat was m uch fast er and comfortable and onl y slightly mo re expensive Why didn't she abandon the boat after she complained a bout lewd behavior of the c rew at the shipping office in Banbury Why did she t hen drink and 'socialise' w ith the crew Wh at h appened to h er 'carpe t bag' with which she arr ived on th e boat but which was not mentioned in the court case, nor was it stored in the archives with her, almost empty, t runk The t runk was m arked with initials of her first husb and who had died. How did it happen tha t her shoes were found on the boat but nobody saw he r return to the boat from the forest PC Adrian Kershaw does some brilliant leg work for Morse. He studied hist ory and has inva luable background kn owledge . For instance, he mentions t hat t he boa tmen had bad reputation because th ey worked on Sundays and did not attend church. Later a chapel was built for them in Ox ford. The dead wom an's cloth es and the s hoes found on the boat are submitted to modern f orensic investigatio n. The result is t hat the shoes did not b elong to the de ad woman fou nd in the water because she was much taller.The sho es were ne ver used i n the forest . Only Mrs Frank s' hus band, Charles Franks , was cal led to identify the bod y of the dea d woman. He claimed that, wh ile her face was dark ened and disf igured, he found a birth mar k behind her ear. The prosec utor welcome d that informati on that only a husband or a lover would know. The acc used were n ot shown the body. The defense attorn ey merely claimed that the guilt of the thre e men was not proved. All three accused claimed to the end that they were innocent. One of them was not e xecuted because he embraced Christianity in p rison. Morse ins tructs Kershaw to in vestigate if Charles Franks bene fited from his wife's d eath and, indeed, he pocketed 300 pounds insurance money. Case closed Charles F ranks murder ed a tall women and droppe d her in the canal after meeting Joan na in the forest. If Joanna Frank s jum ped off t he boat at the same time as the dead body hit the water, she swam to the bank and join ed her husband. The coup le changed their name s, in the case of ' Charles Franks ' a second time after he 'died' as Joanna's first h usband. The fourth boatm an, a youngs ter who was not charged, was probably paid by Joanna to give false testimon y. Mor se travels to Irelan d and has a grave of Joanna's first husband exhumed.
